Castaway Cay 5K Query

So I convinced to DH to run with me. Is there time for us to put a bag down on a couple of chairs before the race?

I was going to bring my bathing suit and flip flops and change after the race, while he goes back to change and get the kids from the kids club. It would be nice to also have a couple chairs saved during that time.

We didn't get onto the family beach until well after lunch (5K, then an 11AM stingray encounter, then lunch) and we had no problems finding empty chairs. Twice, even!

The last two times we ran the fun run, we brought everything we needed to the 5k. They have a big box container to keep things in at the start and a cast member stays with it. We even put in our snorkel gear. After the run, we went over to the bathrooms and rinsed off under the outside shower, then put on our bathing suits. We did make sure we brought a couple plastic bags for our stinky gear and for our medals and one of our party took everything back to the ship, but it's not necessary. NWhen it was just us, we went straight to the adult beach and then had lunch an hour later. With the kids, we went straight to lunch (11am) with the rest of our party (we had 22 people sailing) and got lunch out of the way so we could snorkel while everyone else was eating.

I just did the 5K last Friday. My fitbit was very confused by the double back course, and recorded only 1.74 miles from the start to the Serenity Beach turnaround. (it didn't record the trip back!)

Took me one hour, one minute. It was just too darned humid to run! That'll teach me not to train inside in the air conditioned gym!
How did you get to 1.74 miles from the start to SB? Assuming you did the bicycle path loop once in each direction, you would be way past 5K (only 3.1 miles) if you double the distance recorded by your fitbit.

She was a runner herself and, as you know, many runners are quite obsessive about things like that.

Yes we are. And if I could get my garmin connect page to come up I could give my own measurement. :)

OK finally. We're not talking miles here. :) For Princess and the Castaway Challenge 5Ks I have 3.11 on my Garmin. For the normal island run (feb 2013) I have 3.1.

Now, if she had run the Challenge 5K course, then yes. THAT is 5K certified. But the fun run? Only if you do a lot of weaving to make up almost 1/2 a K.

Yep.

Honestly, I've no idea! I started my Fitbit to record the run at the starting line, and turned it off when I crossed it again. On the map on the app, it showed 1.74 miles, with the starting line as the start, and the finish at SB.

I think that's the problem. Serenity Bay is the turn-around point. Not the end. The start and end are the same place.

Yes, I noticed that when I ran across the finish in same place that I started. ;-)

My family of four did the 5K yesterday! Good for you OP on training and getting shape for it! Our 17yo DD is now a runner and she wanted us all to participate so we did. She did so well and so did little Sis age 13yo. DH and I both ran a little bit but walked most of it. There were “runners” of all levels let me assure everyone! Lots of fun, lots of camraderie, lots of encouragement along the way.

It was super hot, though. Like, really hot. Not sure what the temp will be when you are on the island but I don’t think I was fully prepared for the heat and humidity.

The medals are amazing, and I am really, really excited for you!!

My husband is concerned about this cutting into Castaway time, one thing we are very much on the same page about is that we like to be on the island absolutely as long as possible. So I will be bringing my swimsuit and flipflops off the ship with me - and then whether he leaves a little bit after, or registers as a walker and waits for me, we will head straight to the snorkelling immediately afterwards :)

We did things a little differently when we did the 5K last time. We walked, at snail's pace, so it took us far longer than anyone else :rotfl:We were too unfit to walk fast, and were having a much better time throwing ice cold water at each other, getting scared my giant branches that looked like snakes and seeing dead wildlife. :rotfl: Anyway, long story short, we did the 5K, went back to the ship, showered, changed, had a quiet lunch at Cabanas before returning to the island and up to Serenity Bay for some wading and fish spotting. To be fair, we are not really beachy people so it's not that much of a big deal to us. We probably enjoyed the quiet of the boat and Cabanas more than the swim at SB! :thumbsup2 This time we are bike riding and parasailing, and probably avoiding the 5K. But good luck to those who are trying.

I way of an update, I was running today. Week 7, day 2 of the Couch to 5K. For the second time this week, I ran for 25 minutes and covered right at two miles. It has been a little bit cooler the last few days, at 5:30am when I run, so I'm feeling pretty good. I'm not getting the distance that C25K expects, they calculate a 10 minute mile and I run more like a 12- 13 minute mile, so in 25 minutes, I run two miles instead of two and a half. Next week it goes up to a 30 minute run, and is supposed to cover three miles. NOT GOING to happen! So, I plan to run to complete the 8 week program, and then begin adding in an additional 5 minutes a week, until I can run 3+ miles without stopping. At my present speed, it'll take me between 38 and 44 minutes to run the whole 5k, but I intend to run it all. We'll see...

I think you have the right idea! You are doing well. Nothing wrong with a 12 minute mile. You will make it- you will see!

Thank you. Is anyone able to share the actual time they were able to start the run? Thank you!

I cannot remember. I only did it twice then I figured out running is not my jam - taekwondo is. It's been a few years since I did it.I think we met at 8 or 8:30 and left the ship about 9 (invariably people will forget something and have to run back), but I'm not positive. And I know I didn't look to see the exact time they said "Go".

That is helpful- thanks! Just trying to gauge how much of the day will be taken up by the 5k. I'm not that fast!

I’ve done the CC 5K fun run/walk three times, once in 2016 and twice in 2017. For all three, we left the ship between 8:45 and 9:00, and started the run between 9:20 and 9:30.

This is awesome! Tonight, once I am done my homework, I am going to do W7/D1, which is the 25 minute run. I am Canadian - so I only know KM, but my coworker is a runner and he helped me with the math, he says I am on track to run 5KM in 32 minutes, and I think I am happy with that :) I will likely run/jog most of the CC5K :) (at least that is my plan, if there is some type of weird December heat wave, that will not happen as planned :) ).
