I am thinking about taking my wife and two little ones (3 and 1) on our first family trip to Disneyland in early September. I suddenly had a thought concerning the CMs at that time of year. Are many of them students that would need to be replaced due to educational commitments or do they have a pretty steady staff? I was just wondering if there is drop in quality just after Labour (Labor) day.

You have nothing to worry about regarding "the labor force" lol. Unlike more regional theme parks that tend to be open during summer only, DL doesn't depend primarily on students to make up their staff, as they a popular destination year-round.

What I would say, though, is be aware that right after Labor Day is when your chances are high that a few popular rides will close down for maintenance, having been used and abused through the busy summer season. It's a great time to go as far as crowds are concerned, but some rides may be closed and entertainment (fireworks, shows) may only be offered on weekends.

I understand that. We are already planning on going again in May 2013 and considering the age of my kids and their lack of knowledge of what is available to them, I don't think it will be hard to bypass the closed rides. My kids will be okay as long as Mickey is not down for maintenance.
