Hi!

I've noted a few times on the DIS, mention of a cast member discount for purchasing DVC points.

Does anyone have more information about this:
- What is the discount? Is it always the same or does it vary?
- What relationship does the purchaser have to have with the cast member? I'm assuming "close" relative, but does this include siblings?

Thanks, any information is appreciated!!

We bought last month and used the cast member discount. My wifes brother is a cast cast member. it includes immediate family, Spouse, Children, siblings or parents. One catch is they have to work in the park, for instance those who work in downtown disney are eligble but the discount is less.

We recieved a discount of 25% for the cast member plus the 10% it made for a heck of a savings. I am not sure we would have bought in if we did not have it. The only problem though is we were told it ended on the 20th of Jan. But I have no more info on that.

Hope this helps even a little contact em if you need more

When I was a CP we got the 25% plus the 10% as well, I THINK. I was just so blinded by the fact that we were FINALLY going DVC.

In retrospect, my parents wished they bought in earlier (as I had suggested year before) since we do wind up going about every other year. However, After that discount my dad was pretty much on cloud nine :)

Our first trip as members will be in May at VWL, and we can't wait.

It's a good discount IMHO.

I am a little confused about the discount. I thought it was only 25% off. What is the extra 10% that you are referring to? If that is the case, you only paid $65 a point???

I ask this because I live in Orlando and was thinking about getting a part time job at Disney just so I could get a discount when I buy into DVC. $65 a point would be an incredible deal! I went ahead and purchased under the F & F special, but could always use more points.

On our first contract in 1994 we were able to use my brother's discount. At the time he was a waiter at Flaglers at the Grand Floridian. We also used him when we made our first add on at OKW. However, the rat left Disney before we got our most recent contract at SSR.

As far as the point made that the employee has to "work at the park" I think it is more realistic to say the individual has to work directly for Disney to get the the max discount. Many of the restaurants in Downtown Disney are tennant, non-Disney establishments and while those employees do get some Disney buying benefits, but they are not as good as the Disney employee buying benefits. Again this information is first hand because another brother worked at Portabello at DTD and had a discount but not as good as the brother working for Disney at Flaglers.

It's 25% off, then they subtract the developer discount, if you purchase enough points to qualify, so SSR was $65 and AK was $67ish. As far as where they are employed, my DD is not "in the parks" and we still qualified. Be aware, though, that selling the contract is a little dicier for CMs.

Dawn,

Could you PM me and give me a little more details about what you mean in regards to selling the contract. So for example, if in 10 years I decide I do not need as many points and no longer work for Disney, would it still be tricky? Also, is renting the points that you are not going to use completely not allowed if you purchase with the discount? I am very interested in this information, because I really am considering getting a part time job there.

Our oldest DS was on Careerstart with Disney last year working at Cirque and he was eligible for the 25% CM discount. This year we have a College Program participant who is working at a resort food court and we were eligible for 25% again ($65.75/point). We just bought on Jan 31st, so it's still in effect.

I think it's definitely worth a part-time job! We have 1 more DS who wants to do the CP, but then I may have to get a part-time job myself to add on!

Good luck!

We also bought extra points when DD was in the College Program. We were told she could get a discount for parents, siblings and grandparents.

You are correct slimpaw. CMs in the college program can use the discount for many family members. Then you get whatever the current offering is at the time. I think the discount may also apply to seasonal employees. Makes it too good to pass up!!

Do you know if the cast member discount would apply to a niece?

Thanks.

I believe it is just immediate family that is eligible for the discount, but I would contact them and ask. The program that ended on the 20th of January was the Friends and Family discount.

I've been a CP twice, and I never knew about this!!!!!

Is the CM discount only available if you buy directly from Disney, or do they offer it through the resale outlets as well?

discount is only available through DVC. it is not a straight 10% for developer discount. while friends and family discount was $15 a point, CM's discount was $10 at SSR which is still in effect, and F&F is over. at AKV dev discount is $8 a point in addition to CM discount. the nice thing is that they do the 25% on the total price before developer discount. final price per point for our AKV add on was $67.75, as opposed to $65.75 at SSR. the other difference was that with SSR add on we would have received last years points banked into this year. at AKV we could get those points immediately, but give up the $8 a point discount and must use them within 7 months.
