Cashing in my jar of change

In the past when I've tried to cash in my change at the bank they wanted to charge me to count it. Is there away around this? I think CoinStar charges you unless you get a gift card, and I don't want one of those. If I count out the change before hand, write out a deposit slip, can the bank charge me to count the money again?

TIA

TD bank and P&C have free counters in the lobby. It prints out a slip that you exchange for cash.

You probably have to have it rolled. I think most banks will give you cash when you turn in rolled coin. They might make you write your account number on the coin rolls just in case you counted wrong. I think they weigh the rolls to make sure they are accurate. My credit union does not make me write my acct. number anymore, but they used to.

Unfortunately we are kinda stuck with coinstar. Our credit union doesn't deal in change. They don't give it and they don't take it. Told DH we should find another bank just to put change in and save there for WDW! :rotfl:

Our Credit Union just added machines thank goodness. Rolling is such a pain! lol.

We went to the local Chase branch (we have an account there) and they didn't charge to count change and give us bills for it.

Same thing here, our credit union and banks charge for the change... Pisses me off big time.. and that's even if it's rolled!:confused3

If you have an account at that bank, they should not charge you for bringing in coin.

It must be a regional thing-I don't know of any banks around here that charge their customers for counting their change.

From threads over the years, yes, it is VERY regional.

Chase doesn't charge (though they do balk at it! and they require it to be rolled if it's enough to be rolled...for example, 49 cents in pennies is OK but 50 cents will need be rolled by you). BUT when they were Washington Mutual, they always wanted to charge me 10%. I got around this by just doing it a few rolls at a time (they were OK with this) but it got seriously old.

Their excuse was that they don't keep the change, that it has to go elsewhere, and they pay by weight for cash transportation...so they pass the charges along.

When I cashed my change in the other day, the teller didn't say a word about any charges for it. After she had run it through the machine, she deducted 1% from it. I was mad. I bank at a couple different banks and I may have been able to get it done for free from somewhere else. I know it was only a few bucks, but it annoys me. Mostly, because she didn't tell me up front! I worked at this bank (20 years ago - and have kept my account there ever since!) and they always used to waive fees like that for customers.

So, my point.....make sure you always ask first!

She probably assumed you knew....I would be mad too.

I don't keep much change around. I can't stand it.....I will get $5 in change and go use it at Target or somewhere just to get rid of it! The kids love it when I find $5-$10 in change.....I will usually let them get something they wouldn't normally get.

I have no idea where I would cash it in around here other than coinstar. I have done coinstar before and gotten an Amazon gift card......but I prefer not to have to do that.

When I was younger my mom, brother, and I would roll coins and then take them to Giant for cash. I'm not sure if they do it anymore since they all have the Coinstar machines now...

wow I knew Constar charged for counting coins but I never knew banks did as well. Then again I guess I didn't realize people don't roll their own coins. We always have because they have to be rolled to take them to the bank for deposit or cash. You can't take a jar of coins to my bank and get it deposited or exchanged for cash. This is one of the ways we save for Disney all out change goes into a bank and we roll it and put it in our Disney fund.

I have always just rolled my coins and taken them to the bank and have never had a problem.

Our Wells Fargo has a counting machine in the lobby. If you have an account with them they don't charge to use it.

That just amazes me!! A bank place refuses money...sheesh. I roll all my coin..just refuse to get less to have a machine do it, while I watch TV..I actually enjoy it :) Then I write my account number on it and deposit it directly into my trip fund.

I roll mine and deposit at my bank. I have Bank of America and the ones near me do not charge a fee for rolled coins (not sure if they charge a fee if you do not roll it). I always wrote my acct # on the rolls but the teller told me last time that I do not need to write it on them.
