Cashiers, I do not want your saliva

Meh doesn't bother me. Not only have I been a cashier and those bags can be darn hard to get open, but I also don't plan on putting that one tiny little spot of bag anywhere near my face. Any open produce that may be in the bag is all going to get washed. It's just really not that big of a deal for me to have someone lick their fingertip which is about the size of a dime and touch one spot on my bag with it. I have bigger things to worry about. If I worried about every teeny tiny thing, I'd never be happy. To each their own pet peeves I guess.....

Agree. Have been known to tell them will do my own bagging and then change bags right in front of them. YUKK! Same thing with $$$. Don't wet your fingers to make sure you aren't giving me an xtra buck. And gross when I see you cleaning/wiping your nose and then want me to get in your line. NO THANKS. Since you don't use hand sanitizer after.

and honestly like i said in my other post the cashier shouldn't either, she should be concerned putting her finger in her mouth after touching money

It doesn't bother me too much either, but employees should be told when trained to watch this kind of thing. Having worked in these types of jobs, I can tell you you get to the point of doing this automatically and really don't think about it.

Someone said something about not licking their fingers "just to make sure you are not giving me an extra buck". That buck means a lot to someone making minimum wage and besides too many buck mistakes can get someone fired. Thats why they do whatever is necessary to make sure they don't make that kind of mistake.

And I agree with the pp about taking off when sick. When you have to have every hour you can get, you don't just call in for the sniffles. Besides some managers will write you up for calling in for that.

That said, many - if not most- low wage hourly workers do not get paid sick time and are often severely penalized for calling in sick. You look young in your avatar, but beleive me, there are plenty of people who need every time they make in thier minimum wage jobs just to keep the rent paid and put food on the table for thier kids. Its very easy for us middle class white collar types to say "stay home", but its not so easy for people to do.

I'm in my 30's and have had my share of crappy jobs back in my work history. I do understand that people need to make a living but there has to be some consideration for people when you work directly with them.

Though I don't like to see it, I know exactly what you're talking about. There are so many gross things going on "behind the scenes" I could get sick to my stomach thinking about it.

That's exactly the way I feel. I'm not going to hurt somebody's feelings over something I can see (and therefore feel I can control) just because it's visible to me. I'd rather control my own environment by washing my items/food/hands and be confident that I'm doing the best I can rather than being falsely secure just because I perceive that the person is following good procedure in handling things.

I agree! I was a bank teller for several years and I can't tell you how many body sweat soaked bills I got from women's bra's or snotty tissues that they just used on them or their kids faces for me to throw away (most of the time I would just hold up the trash can). Or how many customers put money in their mouth's while fishing things out of their purses? Germs are everywhere unfortunately. I just take lots of Vitamin C and wash my hands often and hope for the best.

Although on the plus side I was sick just about constantly the first year I was a bank teller (2001) and haven't really been sick since!

I guess I have been gulity of doing that. I was a cashier for years and those darn plastic sacks stick together so bad I would lick my finger and use it to help open the bags. My finger was dripping yet or anything like that, right before I quit they finally got use some lotion like stuff to use.

If I saw a cashier do that not a big deal to me.

My DH and I witnessed someone blow their nose in a dollar bill once. My non-germaphobe DH was completely grossed out. He found out what checkout line the guy was in and went to a completely different one.

While I agree that there is a lot of stuff that happens behind the scenes it isn't an excuse to pile one more thing on.

We also touch surfaces all day covered with germs and bugs but I still wash my hands after using the bathroom. I'm not going to say to myself "well, you touched gross stuff all day so don't worry about washing your hands now".

While we can't do anything about the unavoidable almost everything in this thread is avoidable. I'm not germaphobe but that doesn't mean I welcome inconsiderate behavior.

I agree with you here, of course we wash our hands - that is the one thing we can control with respect to germs. In fact, it's pretty much the ONLY thing we can control. But I don't get all worried if I see a cashier do a little finger lick because really, that is one of the least germy things that will happen to us on a given day. We need to just concentrate on what we can control by keeping ourselves clean.

Or what about when your in line and the person in front of you has their Money or Store Card in their MOUTH...........oh gross. Do you know how many times i have seen that!!!!. Oh yep and the joggers/walkers , with wet bills from their clothes.......oh gross. oh yes, the Half eaten apple by a child, or 1/2 banana,or Dirty Car Keys............cant think about it anymore....HAHA
