Cash Tips

My husband is thinking about giving all of the "tippable" cast members (server, asst server, etc) a cash tip on the first day of the cruise that is about 50% :smooth: above the suggested amount. He feels that this may encourage even better service than on our last trip (not that it was less than super). Any thoughts on this would be appreciated, especially from cast members.:thewave:

Hi I've not heard of anyone doing that before, if it was me so just my opinion, i'd let guest services know when you get on board that your last trip didn't rate excellent for the servers and that you hope that this time the service exceeds your expectations, and then reward the staff who deserve it with the extra , i'd kind of feel i was bribing the staff to be nice to me and provide excellent service before they actually were. as i said my opinion, go with whatever makes you comfortable have a great cruise.

I have heard of others on different lines doing this. If that's what he wants to do, go ahead. If you have a lot of special requests off the bat, then I would certainly do it, but otherwise you should hopefully have excellent service throughout the entire cruise.

We had a large family group on the Magic in December. The third night was a rough night at dinner. All the kids were fussing and kept changing their mind about what they wanted. We had a drink spill. On top of this a couple of the adults made a few extra requests that night. It was a rough night for the servers but they really worked hard to make things right. They spent some extra time entertaining the children, made sure that the kids got want they wanted to eat etc.

On the way out of the dinning room my dad slipped some cash to both our server and assistant server, I think it was a $20 each. They were very appreciative.

Up to that point the service had been excellent, after that point it was incredible. They went even further above and beyond on the remaining nights.

So in this case, cash tips early in the cruise did have a positive impact.

Of course at the end of the cruise we all tipped the wait staff generously as a thanks for the incredible service they provided.

I don't suppose that it can hurt to tip big on the first night. In 10 cruises, we've always had excellent service. Of course, we do have a favorite server, and request him whenever he is on board. I really don't think that it would make things any better for us (as it is already super), but again, couldn't hurt.
