Can you use cash to pay for purchases on board? If we find souvenirs onboard does that get charged to our onboard account or can you pay cash directly for those purchases?

You have to put the cash onto your onboard account and then use the account. The only other method of payment onboard is with Disney giftcards.

The whole ship is cashless. Every purchase will be charged to you on board account, including all purchases at CC. The easiest way is to load your Disney gift cards onto your on board account. Keep the cards, because if you don't use the entire balance it will be returned to you original method of payment: your Disney gift card.
As stated tips (dining, Palo/Remy, bar staff, stateroom host) can be given in cash, but all tips can also be charged to your stateroom. In essence there is no need for cash while onboard.

I fully appreciate the cashless ship (never carry it or cc at parks) I am only asking about gift cards as that's how my littles budget. Once the gift card is spent their shopping is over. It's hard to do that if I apply it to the on board account. I can keep track other ways but the gift card is the most mindless and easiest. ;-)

They can use the Disney gift cards in the shops on board the ship

As PP states, your kids can use gift cards at the gift shops onboard the ship. But other things -- such as smoothies, light-up drink cups, snacks at the theater, items at Castaway Cay, etc. must be charged to the KTTW card. Each charge is tracked so you can keep track of who charged how much. It's not easy as "here's your gift card, use it until it's gone then you're done spending." since you cannot set limits per card. If the kids are really young and doing limited spending anyway, it may not be a concern.

Enjoy your cruise!

Did they change the no limits?

I set a $50 per room key for my kids no problem a few years ago.

Thank you, I wasn't sure if it would be accepted in addition. They are tweens, but it has always been that vacation money is what they have earned (allowance, good grades, etc.) they don't get souvenirs just because they want them it's because it was earned in someway.

Your stateroom account charges are broken out by person so it is easy to go to guest services and check how much someone has spent. Last time I knew you could not put a credit limit on a account. You either have charging privileges or you don't.

AFAIK, DCL doesn't offer ability to set limits on the kids' KTTW cards -- they either have charging privileges turned on or off. If it changed recently, I missed that.

Hi, just a quick clarification. I am new to this, our first cruise is Feb 28th! So can they not run debit/credit cards on the ship to pay off the onboard account? Thanks!

You can back up your onboard account with a credit or debit card. Or gift cards. Or cash.

As they said, only cash needed on board are for tips but keep in mind that many of the stops that you will make prefer dollars. The cab drivers, for example, arnt going to be taking credit cards just cash. Have cash for the island stops you make but keep it in your room safe until then.

To be clear, your on-board account is directly linked to your credit card. Any on-board charges you make will be charges to your credit card (at the end of the cruise). You will not be allowed to leave the boat until you have paid your on-board charge (as far as I know).

Bring some 1$ if you are going to be using room service.
