This may not be a very popular opinion but I am going to say it anyway.

I feel everyone is entitled to fair and competent representation and I am now of the belief that Casey is not getting that. Baez and Sims are not qualified to handle a case of this magnitude. I want Casey put away for life but this representation is going to be the death of the state. I truly believe there are grounds for a mistrial based on inappropriate representation. I hate that idea but these lawyers are not qualified. I have tried to laugh it off and laugh at their mistakes for the past few weeks but they are bumbling this process and that is not the way things are suppose to be done in the USA. As much as I despise what Casey did, she is entitled to fair representation and she is clearly not getting that.

While I do agree with you that Sims and Baez are not doing a very good job with their presentation and handling of the case in order for a verdict to be overturned based upon inadequate representation the lawyer would literally have to be drunk, on drugs, absent or asleep during the trial. The fact that they are not calling appropriate witnesses or asking good questions is a matter of our opinion. They are putting up a defense (albeit not a good one in our judgement). She has chosen these lawyers and they are putting up a defense case. Just because the prosecution is doing a better job (in your & my opinion) doesn't mean that she has a mistrail in the works.

I think Mason is totally qualified, but for whatever reason he isn't up there doing the directs. I think the defense doesn't have much to work with, but they aren't doing the best with what they have, either, by putting these ineffective people up there. I'm not sure they could get an effective counsel mistrial simply because they do have a very qualified lawyer on their team, they just aren't utilizing him! Maybe that part in itself is ineffective, I don't know. I agree though, Casey, even though I believe she is guilty, she deserves a fair trial.

The commentators I am watching (a judge and a defense lawyer) are saying that the defense is simply being out-lawyered. They said that a very good defense attorney would be able to get this witness qualified as a witness and get these questions answered. They claim Sims is doing a horrible job, way too mousey, and an assertive, well qualified lawyer would not have any problem. They said that Cheney Mason would have been much more qualified in this situation.

Can they switch attorneys in the middle of questioning?


And I don't have issue with defense being outlawyered...but it is like watching a top seeded NCAA football team playing against Whatsamatta U.

I understand what you're saying. I absolutely think that Casey is entitled to competent counsel. The only thing is...I don't know if Baez & company fit the legal definition of "ineffective counsel" (or whatever it's called) to the point of having a verdict overturned, or there being a mistrial. As I've said before, the end of the trial won't be the end of this case. I think, for one reason or another, we'll be hearing about Casey Anthony for a very long time.

AND...I think it's difficult to defend a guilty person, which IMHO, she is. They dug themselves in deep with their opening statement, but IMHO, since I believe she IS guilty, nothing the defense says or does in the trial would change the outcome (if it is, in fact, "guilty").

Can't Casey herself say anything to get Cheney up there? This is pinful to watch.

Absolutely 'n Casey can fight for a mistrial all she wants. If convicted, I'm sure she will fight for a mistrial 'n if she gets the death penalty, her appeal will be automatic. She's gettin' a fair trial.

But...do you really think they're TRYING to not be good defense lawyers so that the verdict could be overturned based on inadequate representation? I know other people have said that, but I'm just not buying that any lawyer would do that on purpose.

Dorothy Sims is not a criminal lawyer. Her specialty is social security/disability work. She has never tried a murder case or any type of felony case where the sentencing would be more than 5 years.

They can not switch in the middle, however, they said they could come back from lunch and put Cheney Mason up there and act like he was up there the entire time. It isn't against the rules, per say, but it just isn't done. They said Sims should fake food poisoning at lunch so she doesn't have to come back!

As a condition of helping free their daughter, Padilla got parents George and Cindy Anthony to agree to allow his colleague, Conroy, to move into the Anthony home for 24/7 protection. (Conroy’s cohabitation ended after Casey was re-arrested on bad-check charges nine day later.) "

Now that's love! DH's birthday was last Saturday...I think. We did celebrate it on Father's Day (kids made brunch), and the gifts I ordered (late) came in Tuesday. And the kids and I realized later...no cake! Well, one year out of 53 he didn't get a cake...no biggie.

I believe they are truly trying to do their best but they are just not qualified (with the exception of CM). By all accounts, this witness could be powerful. He has a great deal of experience with science and with testifying. He could provide reasonable doubt but the defense needs to know how to ask the right questions of this guy. The defense has managed to confuse their own witness because they are such bumbling fools. The jury has lost interest and the defense doesn't seem to know how to get themselves out of this mess.

Time after time I have heard the commentators say that Baez made a good point and was heading in the right direction but he either drones on and on and loses everyone or he gets off track and the little point he was making to prove reasonable doubt is lost. More qualified attorneys would close the deal. They would make their point without hours worth of testimony. Look how fast Ashton generally is. He asks the question, makes the point and moves on.

Then how on earth was she put on this case? Isn't there another lawyer we saw during jury selection that we haven't seen since?

As for ineffective counsel, I don't know, Casey was informed that Baez wasn't qualified, she signed off on it anyways. I actually do think he is trying but unfortunately he's just inexperienced....
