Cases rising or dropping by you?

SARS-CoV-2 has not been eradicated anywhere. We will likely live with it for quite a while
I never said it was. Conquering it doesn't mean getting completely rid of it. It means being able to live relatively safely with it. CA was doing that well. Now we're not.

Well, now that most places understand precautions and responses to take, the nursing homes aren’t a bad place to be now. Where else would they go? To a hospital? Better than out in the wild where irresponsible able-bodied adults pretend like either the virus doesn’t exist or doesn’t matter.
No, they're not a good place to be. The majority of our new cases where I am are in long term care and skilled nursing facilities. One of the problems is that the care givers can also be the irresponsible adults out and about in their regular life.

The properly run facilities don’t have problems.

You just need to follow the money all the way from the top to the employees working at those facilities to understand why.
I won’t get into it because mentioning anything remotely close to politics apparently is a no-no here; can’t even mention the “T-word.”

Hopefully, this situation at hand renews conversations about universal healthcare.
(wait, am I running afoul of the board rules by mentioning this, too)

This is one instance where I think the percentage only tells a partial story. Which one is more concerning? Going from 1 case to 2 or from 100 cases to 200 cases? They've both doubled.

And, because it should be asked, what's the percentage increase in amount of testing? If the number of tests administered went up 150%, I wouldn't be as concerned as if the number of tests stayed flat.

Our testing from what I can tell has remained about the same. My county hasn't done a very good job in reporting testing number lately (nothing or very few and then what appears to be 3 days at once). If you go strictly by the numbers we have had two days (in the past week) were we had a 100% positive rate.

In my state it seems largely related to PPE though I'm sure not taking the correct precautions when no on the clock can increase risks.

This is some information that was discussed more in-depth today from my state though it's been kinda rumblings over time: "dozens of nursing homes recently reported current or impending shortages of masks, gowns and gloves critical to keeping elderly and frail residents safe. More than 60 nursing homes were close to running low on N95 masks and 11 didn’t have enough as of the first week of June. At least 55 were approaching insufficient supplies of gowns and 47 soon wouldn’t have enough surgical masks. But three months into the pandemic, nursing homes and their professional associations say they’re still struggling to purchase enough personal protective equipment (PPE) on the open market as other health care providers, businesses and private individuals snatch up whatever is available. State officials said the state can provide aid, but nursing homes respond that obtaining government help involves navigating a bureaucratic maze. Personal protective equipment is in scarce supply for some nursing home providers. Not all nursing homes have enough should an outbreak occur, and many providers do not have access to testing resources"

The testing aspect I know my county is trying to step up more in that. In terms of death rates a lot of it is coming from my county and the county above me and in long-term care facilities.

Pfft so easy to go down that route. Harder to dig into other reasons I guess.

A large part of my state's issues with testing kits, with PPE is simply being outbid for it. If we had the ample supplies there would be less issues with obtaining it at the long-term care facility level.

I’m confident you have little info about how the healthcare infrastructure is set up in this country.
I'm confident that some people throw around stuff whenever they can just so they can interject it into the conversation I can only surmise that it makes them feel better to do so. Your statement that the properly run facilities don't have problems is quite a bold statement considering long-term care facilities have been an issue all over the U.S. and into Canada as well. We must have a mass industry-wide tons and tons of improperly run facilities then I guess all over.

we have been very steady at about 4 per 1000 of current infections for close to a month

While it could be better given that most business are open, albeit with some very significant precautions it does give a good break even point (active infections not increasing or decreasing) where most in public are willing to respect social distancing and are wearing masks inside. Just my perception but outside of the institutional settings issues it appears that much of the current spread is from gatherings of extended family and friends rather than more typical community spread

not my area, but orange county FL at 700+ new cases today

Flu season is a ways off. Let's hope AZ will be in a better position in the fall/winter.
let's hope (and pray) so.... I did some reading on CDC site, compared the 3-4 months of our last 2 flu season stats (and deaths) compared to the pandemic stats. It doesn't matter how you slice it (percents, test levels etc) the number of fatalities from average flu season vs. pandemic was DOUBLE in the US. And that was with all the lockdowns and quarantine stuff. I'm truly horrified to think about what could have happened if life went on as 'normal' as so many (maybe not here, but other places around the 'net) have been wanting. And if this ramps up again for the 'flu season' and states are still blithely reopening, I'm shuddering just thinking about it.

Don't forget, flu season is twice as long as what we've experienced so far with Covid 19.

I calculated the monthly averages of deaths reported .... i.e. xxx deaths in two months of flu season xxx deaths in 4 months of covid reporting.
This is approximate at best,1- b/c reporting is usually faulty,2- b/c there was a clear jump in "flu and pneumonia" mortality rates right before (like 2-3 weeks) they called it a pandemic and gave it a name here..... it jumped by 50% all of a sudden.
so it's strange thing to overlay when comparing the different report pages (and interactive stuff) b/c at some points the USA is shown in 'green' for flu, but there's also the pandemic raging at the same time (overlap).... I can't listen to tons of opinions and guessing, but I can look at the numbers that we have, and compare them.
Covid 19 is no joke... and it's not the flu. The numbers just are what they are.

My county of 500k was doing really well. Not too long ago we only had 1 person hospitalized across our 2 hospitals. Today, there are 20 hospitalized. Mandatory masks just went into effect today. Hopefully that will bring the rate down.

I am hearing from my small business owner friends that they are getting employees refusing to wear masks for health reasons. As employers, we aren’t allowed to ask for documentation so I’m not sure how that’s supposed to work. I think if you are truly exempt because you have a health condition, it would be very easy to provide a doctor’s note. Hopefully, the governor provides some direction to business owners on how to best handle this.

We have 10 cases TOTAL in my county and about 1,100 State wide since this began. Currently we are the 4th best State for low covid cases. Our governor is the best - has done an amazing job and the residents of this state have also!

PA cases are starting to go up again ... or are kinda flat. The lowest day (since March 26) was June 16 at 326. We were at 579 yesterday.

We are going up here. People are very resistant to the mandatory mask rule going into effect at 5pm today.

As for those who claim the numbers are only "up" because we are testing more...uh yeah. That's how it works. But WHY are we testing more? Are they randomly stopping people on the street to test them? NO. They are testing people who are either SICK and need to be tested or who have come into contact with someone who was positive.

That's not even true.
