Cases rising or dropping by you?

No wonder cases in Niagara are rising. I angers me when I see things like this.
I had to find the information elsewhere as it was under a paywall but it doesn't make it clear if the nursing home was following COVID procedures or not. It's one thing to say someone let the virus in and despite best efforts it still spread, it's another thing to say they are responsible for it spreading within a designated place but protocols were lax to begin with.

A nursing home in my state where all residents contracted the virus (61 or 62 depending on the source) and 10 had died, in a county that has extremely high cases per 1,000 people mostly due to this nursing home, just lost their Medicare approval due to that and they were monetarily fined. NOW they say they are having strict COVID protocols; yes well it's too late for that now isn't it.

Dr. Mustafa Hirji, Niagara’s acting medical officer of health, said Monday that a cluster of more than 30 somethings who have been spreading the virus in large gatherings where people were not physically distancing or wearing masks, especially in bars, are directly responsible for spreading COVID-19 to at least two Niagara long term care homes.

That was from the article. What I gather is that they are following proper procedures just that these kids are the ones not following guidelines.

I could see that part (more than half the article was under the paywall) but I also saw from a different article that "Niagara Health to take over control of Millennium Trail Manor in Niagara Falls, which has been the site of a month-long COVID-19 outbreak." and further down the article it said "The province said the outbreak on Oakwood Drive was severe enough that it required "enhanced management.""

I'm unfamiliar with how things are being handled within each province in Canada but usually when control is taken away from long-term care facilities here in the U.S. it's because something was not being done properly- be it masks by staff, be it not having patients in isolation who are positive or presumed positive, be it not alerting the health department to cases, to so many more.

I'm def. not trying to excuse people, of any age, for not adhering to the guidelines. No doubt outbreaks are still occurring at long-term care despite measures all over the darn place; there's still ones going on in my county so frustrating that it may be. Was just more curious if the cases to long-term were exacerbated due to issues on the long-term care facilities end if that makes sense.

Were you reading the number of total tests by any chance? I saw a news article from 6 hours ago saying it was 3,433 new cases, 5,413 negatives. Add those together and that's 8,846 which is pretty close to your number. Just wondering out loud :flower3:
You’re right! I did read the number wrong. Thanks for catching that.

Today’s numbers are 5,771 positives and 5344 new negatives :(.

My DH had me laughing..
We just got back from Disney and people asked us if we were quarantining...
We live in Texas I'm surprised Florida let us in...

Tuesday's numbers were 5,771 people testing positive for the first time and 15,344 testing negative for the first time. Actual testing numbers won't be released until later today but my guess from the data is about 6,000 positive tests out of about 36,000 tests. Obviously as the pandemic has continued on it has become more of an issue with the moronic way the state is choosing to report numbers. My reservation in Northern WI is 100% positivity rate according to the state because everyone there has already been tested so the only numbers that are getting reported are first time positive results.

Also my school district reported that they are going back to hybrid starting next Thursday, but are going to be virtual only in the week following Thanksgiving and the first week back after Christmas Break. Their published metrics say they the goal is a "case burden" of 9.9 or less for in person instruction, current "case burden" is 999.8.

We are going to Florida here in the next few weeks. Watching the numbers closely.
We just got back.. Disney was awesome you have no worries as far a Disney goes.
We also went to fun spot. They cleaned more than Disney.
I had to go to Walmart and so many people did not have mask.. so do order pick up.

Well shoot. I need to stop reading Wisconsin's Covid page on my phone. Thanks for pointing that out and I promise to double and triple check my number when posting from my phone. 30% positive rate is better than 50%, but still pretty horrible.

I disagree that the "per person" test count is "moronic". Many people are tested routinely even if they do not have symptoms. Students who live in the dorms at the UW System are tested once a week and all staff and employees are tested at least every other week. That's close 2,000 students weekly plus staff. Many health professionals are also tested routinely.

Right now, I think that both metrics are important and both show an alarming number of positive cases.

Starting next semester all students, even those who live off campus, will need to be tested TWICE a week if they want to access buildings on campus. The UW Madison has 43,000 students and a positivity rate of 2%. That will *flood* the 7-day average results with 80,000 negatives and water down the "per test" count. I'm not sure how the state should count those students.

Yep. I can see the importance of having a percentage, but at the end of the day, it’s the sheer number of active cases that is extremely worrisome. The virus is everywhere, and even though cases alone don’t mean serious illness, the hospitalization number shows us how quickly it’s escalating.

Maybe you can explain to me, why is it bad to report the actual number of positive tests as a percentage of total tests processed? What is gained from reporting it the way they currently are? The only reason I see is to artificially inflate the % reported. Maybe they need to change the reporting so that it only counts each person once in a given period, say two weeks or a month. That would then include people like my wife and son that were tested months ago.

106,263. A record.
20 states over 2,000. A record.
12 states over 3,000. A record.
32 states over 1,000. One shy of a record. Another one snuck in 33 ties a record.

That low for the week really was foreboding. And we still have a couple of days worth to go.

The state of Wisconsin reports both results by person (multiple negatives ignored) and results by tests.

Here in Victoria, Australia we have had the exact same number of cases and deaths for the last 6 days in a row...ZERO! Today, for the second time this week, that is also the same number of community transmissions around the entire country, with only 2 cases in hotel quarantine. We now only have 20 known active cases in the state (and none in aged care).

Make no mistake, nobody thinks that we’ve actually eliminated this thing (well, maybe some states have), but it’s an amazing result after having over 700 cases a few months ago!

I'm seeing 9627 cases reported earlier today in Texas. I hope that's a correction of some kind because that's definitely an ugly number.
