For those of us who are still making decisions about air travel in the near future, I'm wondering what has been heard about taking a carryon bag. Southwest didn't say anything to me last night about not being permitted to take a carryon bag (I'll gladly offer it up for a search). It just seems to me that there is going to be major craziness with people saying they need to take the carryon because it has their valuables, medications, etc. Yikes, with the rate at which airlines misplace luggage, this would more than double the number of bags and therefore probably increase the number of lost bags....

I didn't see "no carryons" in the FAA's and in Mineta's statements. Does anyone else have info?

I am at the airport now. At the security checkpoints they are allowing carryons and so are the airlines around here. (Delta< USAir and NW) SW is not flying so I have no idea, but I checked their website and it does not say anything.

I agree that people will always need to carry on a small bag to bring medications, money, id, etc., but I think the carry-on issue was a disaster waiting to happen. In the overall scheme of things, if the airline happens to loose my luggage, it's not the end of the world. I will simply buy fresh undies and enough clothes to get me through 24 hours and deal with it. I would rather be safe, even if it means being inconvenienced. I realize that if someone really wants to do harm and is devious and sophisticated enough, it is possible that another tragedy similar to the one on Tuesday could happen again. But why make it any easier? So many people want to be able to carry on all kinds and sizes of luggage because they feel their time is more important than anyone else's and heaven forbid they should have to wait for their luggage. As far as I am concerned you can hand search me and/or my luggage, x-ray it, have a dog sniff it, or do whatever it takes, I just want to feel safe (or at least safer).

My other concern is that right now, everyone is willing to do whatever it takes to have a secured flight but will everyone still feel that way in a year? or two? I hope the flying public does not become complacent and then start complaining about how long it takes to check in, the stringent security checks, etc. I worked for a major airline and passengers consistently expected (and often planned) to be able to show up 10-15 minutes before departure time. We were pressured to be sure that passengers did not have to wait more than 10-15 minutes in line to check in, even at the busiest times. These demands were a result of passenger complaints. This tragedy has hopefully taught us something - just as freedom has a price, so does security.

Carol A, thanks for the info.

Brookazziz, I agree that I would rather be safe than anything else. I was just wondering if anyone had heard what was going on with the carryon bag situation right now, so I would know how to pack, whether I needed to get a lock for my small (intended to be carryon) bag, etc.

It's probably true that right now, we would all understand the need and importance of being vigilant about security, but you're right--I'm sure that before we know it, people will be griping and complaining about how long it takes to get through security, claiming their rights are being violated by bag checks, etc. I hope I am wrong.....

While there are many things that probably do not need to be carried on my daughter carries to things that are a must as carry ons. Her backpack which is in reality her purse plus. And her viola, which is an expensive, delicate musical instrument and could be damaged beyond repair in baggage. There is no way that instrument will be put in baggage. This is true with all professional string players to the extent they will pay for a ticket for the instrument.
In fact they are so paranoid about their instruments that they will not even allow others to touch the instrument. I don't know how airlines are going to deal with this but they will have to come up with something as musicians are always flying all over the world to play.

Take your medicines and ultra-valuables and put them in a separate small bag. For small children, items such as diapers would be taken out before boarding also.

One idea that may work is to shrink wrap all carry on bags as the passenger checks in. At the same time bags that are too large would be taken away at once for gate checking. Passengers would not be allowed to get or open their carry-ons during the flight.

I was going to pack a carryon with food items...will this still be ok? I suppose I could check it through but it is soft sided. Any thoughts?

When I called soutwest airlines last night, they told me to please limit the amount of carryons that we would be bringing because everything is being checked. So the more you have the more time it will take.

I heard the same thing on TV last night to limit the amount of carryons and luggage to help with time constraints. We usually bring too much anyway.
