Carryon and Gate Check in

Normally I would fly with checked bags and would check in online, check the bags, then proceed to the gate.

With carryons do you just go through security and check in at the gate?? Flying Air Tran if it makes a difference.

Of course, you need to have your boarding pass to get through security, so you need to check in on line, then you can go straight to security. There would really be no "checking in" at the gate. I'm sure that's what you meant, but just to clarify.

I think people may not be totally understanding the question (me included).

Do you mean that you can skip checking in at the counter at the airport? In which case, yes you can skip this.

If however, you mean you can skip checking in online, then no you cannot skip this.

You cannot get through security without a boarding pass, so you'll need to check-in online and print this out (or do so at the airport before security).

There is no need to check-in at the gate (unless AirTran is different than the airlines I've flown).
