Does Disney consider pepper spray a weapon. Do I need to remove the pepper spray from my key chain before entering the parks?

I would remove the pepper spray or just take the car key with you and leave the rest in your glove compartment

:scared1: WHA...!!!!!!!!!!!:scared1: I guess it's safe to assume that you aren't flying to Florida.

Except in the summer -- most cans warn you about leaving pressurized sprays in a hot location, and most cars in the Florida sun will exceed 120 degrees in about half-an-hour.

Unless you LIKE driving around in a cloud of pepper spray... :thumbsup2

No flying, we drive. It is not a big deal but I am curious about the rules. On this board it says any weapon, which depending on the definition could be many common things found in a purse.

If the key chain is in your pocket, it will never be discovered. As for the Florida law:

FLORIDA: Legal.

"Self-defense chemical sprays" are legal. They are defined as "a device carried solely for purposes of lawful self-defense that is compact in size, designed to be carried on or about the person, and contains not more than two ounces of chemical". Section 790.001. Although it may seem redundant, there is an express prohibition against using chemical sprays against a law enforcement officer. Section 790.054.

:rotfl2: Next time I see someone driving crazy I am going to think about your comment and the cloud of pepper spray

My girlfriend flew back and forth to Chicago last year with pepper spray in her purse and made it through airport security both times with it. She didn't do it intentionally, she just forgot it was in there until after she returned home.

Where I come from this would certainly be considered a weapon... Just to satisfy my own curiosity: is it really that common for people to carry pepper spray with them in the States? even on vacation? Not judging, just really curious.

Pepper spray is legal in all 50 states, though some states limit how much you can carry.

I work in law enforcement and pepper spray is considered a self defense weapon in my state. I googled FL laws and some articles expressly called it a weapon some just didn't address it's classification. It's legal to carry in public in FL but does state private entities can limit your ability to carry it. So if Disney is strict with their 'no weapon of any kind' then no you can't carry it in depending on their definition. I have absolutely no knowledge on Disney's policy in regards to pepper spray though.

Please don't misunderstand me; I'm not doubting the legality of it, just wondering if this is something that is commonly done?

ETA: Where I come from (Canada) it is illegal except for very specific uses.

Bad things can happen anytime any place.

I only carry it with me when I run for protection against dogs and black bears. I don't know many people who carry it, but there is a market for the products.

No it is not common to carry pepper spray. I have lived alone in NYC and Nola and neither I nor my friends have carried pepper spray.
I would venture to guess that yes Disney considers it a weapon. It is different from item such as hairspray in a purse because it's correct use is to injure someone. Besides why would you bring it to Disney. If an accident happens would you want to be responsible for ruining someone's vacation or pepper spraying a child.

T answer the question, no, it's not common for people in most of the us to carry pepper spray. I don't know anyone that does, and most of my friends right now are women in their late 20s and early 30s. Ive lived in upstate ny and now live in nc for reference.

Putting aside the issue of weapon. Myself I carry nothing in the parks I do not need. That was 1 of the 1st things I learned on the DIS way back in 1998. DH an I have wallets just for disney very light weight very thin. Car or harley key on it's own key ring, no pictures of kids etc. IF we do not need it in disney it does not go in disney.

are your hands considered lethal weapons if youre a blackbelt in karate?

I think it would be easy all day to debate items that could be used as weapons, such as the hands of a trained fighter or a straw. However the question was about whether or not Disney considered a certain item a weapon, not whether or not other items could be weapons.
