Carry-on tips

Your stroller will have to be gate checked. The agents will tag it and you leave it at the end of the jetway before you board the plane. They will bring it to you at your connection and you will have to gate check it again on your second flight. It will not go on the plane with you.

Well, your choice of empty overhead bins in the vicinity of your seat, yeah.

Nope. The FAs really do not care if I put it six or 10 rows or anywhere ahead or behind my seat. You do not "own" the bin above your seat, it is first come, first served.

Nope. Your fellow passengers care. Nobody 'owns' the space above their own seat - but to stow your luggage over row seven when you're seated in row fourteen is inconsiderate, presumptuous, and narcissistic (other things, too, but I don't want to violate DIS Board Guidelines).

If I get on the plane and walk down the aisle to see row 7 is the only empty bin on the way to row 14, my bag is going up there.
Get some perspective. Narcissistic?? Airplane bins?? :lmao:

You win the rude award. You can't carry your bag to ROW 14? If you are that lazy please put in UNDER the plane. Don't put it in the first empty bin you come to.

Sorry, but calling other people names because you are rude????

I don't think I've ever seen anyone with a seat near the front of the plane take their carryon to the back of the plane. Unless, of course, the overhead bins in the front of the craft were full of bags put there by people too lazy to carry them to their own area. If you can't keep your bag in your own area, check it! You're not the only person on the plane.

Yeah, my mistake (that's what I get for reading in the middle of the night. I should have said egocentric.

I would think that even on a plane where you don't own the space above your seat, that common sense, common courtesy, and mutual respect for your fellow passengers should still apply don't you agree?:confused3

:santa: :santa: :santa:

Regardless of what someone's experience with carry-ons has been in the past, it is now likely that airlines will enforce carry-on limits much more rigorously.

In the past, it seems that every American Airlines flight I was on had a few passengers who carried on bags that filled an entire overhead compartment.

Now that airlines have fees for second checked bags (or even first checked bags), the airlines are unlikely to allow such violations.

This is a great point which we have tried to repeat when people ask about luggage size/carry on size.

I have seen far more FAs enforce carry on limits, as well as prevent anti-social behaviour such as putting bags in sideways or taking bin space many rows in front of ones seat. (Doing so delays boarding as it forces other passengers to 'swim upstream' to find bin space well behind their seats and then try and return against the flow)

Um, it was me that was called the names - narcissistic, rude, etc. I didn't call anyone a name. What I did was suggest that the person who said that what she wanted to call me was unprintable on the Disboard should get some perspective.

If you reread my post, I said that if row 7 was the only available bin (i.e., up to and including row 14 and immediate environs), I would be using it -- rather than lug my bag to my seat, stand with my bag and look around helplessly for a FA while blocking the aisle. If that's rude - guilty. Lazy? uh, okay. Please don't tell me you've never sat in your seat and observed a traveler scanning down the row of already crowed overhead bins and placing a bag in one on the way to his seat. I really don't think I invented this so-called antisocial behavior.

I fly every week. Generally I can't see 7 rows ahead to determine that the overhead is full. Guess you got xray vision?

Put your 22" in the overhead, wheels FIRST!

And check to make sure the door closes. On my 22" if I put it in the "announced way" wheels first, then the door won't close. IF I put it in handle first it shuts just fine. (Not a clue why, but there you have it LOL!)

Mine will only fit longways with the wheels facing out. It has four wheels.

I see the equivalent of "road rage" happening in the aisles. This could get ugly.

I'm thinking hard about changing my packing habits to allow me to take a carry-on only instead of checking a bag. Does every airline have different dimensions for carry-ons, or is it pretty standard? And am I correct I can take my carry-on, plus a personal item that could be a backpack or briefcase? I imagine the airlines are going to really start cracking down on carry-on items since people are going to try to avoid the cost of checking a bag. Any tips for packing?

The luggage has to be able to fit either under the seat in front of you or in the overhead compartment and they are all standard in size requirements. Yes, you can take one carry-on luggage and a personal item, such as a backpack. My backpack has my Ipod, Passporter, camera, wallet (I don't bring my whole pocketbook & I take everything out of my wallet that I will not need during the trip - less to loose), camcorder, etc.

Make sure that ALL of your toiletries are less than 3 oz. Go to Walmart or Target and you will find a ton of travel items, including laundry soap, that are within the travel guidelines. If you prefer larger versions, you can always get a set-priced Priority Mail box from the Post Office and place the items in that, then just mail it down to your resort a few days prior to your arrival date. Make sure you put your name & check-in date. Remember that all of the Disney World resorts have soap & shampoo in the room and will replace them each day.

I found that rolling my clothes saved me alot of room. Also, I only bring enough clothes for 5 days (of a 10-12 day trip), then do laundry mid-trip. I'll bring 5 shirts, 2 pairs of shorts, jeans & a sweatshirt (which I will usually wear, as I go in November/December), bathing suit, 1 pair of Crocs, undies & new socks.

Good tip! Also, anyone doing this can also preprint a return label; pack it inside the box, replace the outbound shipping label before heading home - and mail the remaining items back to themselves.

I also roll my clothes a lot, and plan to get double duty from more heavy-weight/larger items of clothing. Rather than bring three long sleeved shirts, bring one black or navy blue that matches most anything. Rather than jeans, go with chinos or something else made of thinner material. In cooler weather, many things can often be worn more than once.

The biggest thing we do to help us pack light though is to get a unit with a washer/dryer. It's so much more convenient to be able to throw a load in on the way to the parks in the morning than to have to babysit them in common machines.

Onsite, that means a DVC 1BR or larger. Offsite, most timeshares and private condos/pool homes offer the same thing. We travel during Peak season, and we can always get an offsite townhome or condo offsite for about the price of a Value room. Even after adding the rental car (which we would get anyway) and parking, it's less expensive than even a Moderate room during that time.
