We are going to listen to Rick Steves this cruise and try carry on bags only. I don't think it will be an issue since I'm traveling with my 2 sons 14 and 26. But I am wondering about a razor for me and older DS. Can we have one in our ziplock of liquids? or just buy one onboard? We are going to forgo the formal night dining room so we don't have to pack dress clothes.
Anyone else just using carry ons? :confused3

We do carry-ons only when we can, and have never had a problem with razors. Assuming you're using safety razors rather than a straight razor, I don't think anyone will even look at it.

From the TSA site list of prohibited items (http://www.tsa.gov/traveler-information/prohibited-items):

Razor-Type Blades - such as box cutters, utility knives, and safety razor blades (disposable razors and their cartridges are permitted)

Have a great trip!

I'm planning on carry on only too, thanks to Rick Steve's advice. We are also going on a 7-day Med cruise. I plan to bring capris and plain colored t-shirts, and one nice dress for formal (not too formal). Looking for inexpensive foldable ballerina flats. I will take one pair of walking shoes and wear tennis shoes on the plane. Last summer on the Fantasy each member of our family had one suitcase and we walked off the ship with them. Much easier.

We have only done carry ons the last few years and shaving razors (not straight) are NO issue.

They have el cheapo razors in the spa locker rooms too.

Kudos to you for packing light. I am a chronic overpacker and am trying to pack less, but with two daughters it's kinds tough.

But I wanted to write and say, don't do this:

We are going to forgo the formal night dining room so we don't have to pack dress clothes.

As long as you are in nice clothes, I would go to the dining room even if you are not dressed "formally." Having been on 6 DCL cruises now, there are always people dressed the whole spectrum - from very formal to not at all formal.

I was able to pack two long gowns for our honeymoon cruise and still do carryon. I also took at least 3 pairs of shoes and clothes for every day.

For a very long time the only luggage we had was his soft-sided carryon-sized bags, and that's what we brought on our cruise, and they still fit quite a lot. For *most* airlines, it's amazing how big a proper carry-on-sized bag actually is! (the cheapest European airlines, and Qantas are the only ones that have had smaller carry-on measurements that we've found so far)

It's not something I do anymore for Disney or a cruise, but I don't think you have to get rid of formal night possibilities just b/c you're doing carry-on-only. Just gotta get the right carry-ons! His Classic Back Door Bag is perfect for such a thing.

And if your stuff is wrinkly, use the pressing services onboard!

Sidenote: in his new cruise book, does he actually suggest doing carry-on only even for a cruise? One of the original points of carry-on-only is so that you're totally portable for the sort of touring from one place to another that he does. With a cruise that's not needed.

We did it because we were taking public transportation from home to the Seattle train station, taking the train to Vancouver, and a cab to the hotel and on to the cruise. (and then reverse) We had to be portable since we would truly be carrying things (this was before roller bags were so popular).

Actually, though the prices are extreme, what they are saying makes a lot of sense. Just get cheaper versions of what they are describing. I'm not sure what you find so hysterical about the list.

Rolling up your linen clothing :rotfl2: It is not coming out "crisp". :confused3
And don't take your good jewerly because it makes you a target while a $2,000 jacket and $700 purse won't make you a target:rotfl:

I do agree with an earlier poster. I plan to go to Formal night and I am not packing formal wear. Just a black top, pants and some cheap sparkly jewelry. It will give the "fashion police" something to come back and complain about, but.,,.they are not hauling my luggage.

I love Rick Steves' travel books, and would love to take one of his tours some day. After dragging a 25-inch rolling suitcase around train stations in Germany last June post-cruise, I swore I would take only a carry-on size rolling bag on future trips. I may do so for my upcoming 14-night DCL Transatlantic cruise - although I won't be taking trains and doing a lot of walking with luggage this trip.

I packed an outfit (maxi skirt or sundress) for each day, a dress and heels for each night, along with a long formal dress and heels and my pirate costume, three swimsuits and a cover-up all in a carry on size bag. The only thing I couldn't fit was my bag with make up, flat iron, brush, etc, which I tossed in another bag to carry on with my laptop, camera, etc.

You don't have to forgo dressing nicely for dinner to save space when packing. :confused3
