Carry on luggage and a personal item?

Bringing a piece of carry-on luggage this time with stuff I'd like to keep with me. Am I allowed that and a shoulder bag? Or is it just a carry-on and something small like a purse?

Thanks! My shoulder bag is floppy, so it can squish under the seat in front.

If for some reason they say no at the gate, I can always just check my carry-on luggage piece there, right?

Highly unlikely they'll ask a first-class passenger to check a carry-on bag. And the underseat space is larger there, too. You'll have no problem.

it depends on your airline and the level of your ticket. So search on your flight details and then check the airline's website for size and weight restrictions for each.

for example, I'm flying Porter and my ticket doesn't allow a carry on. the personal bag can be up to 17 x 13 x 6 inches. anything more than that and I would have to pay to bring it as a checked bag.

United's personal item dimensions are 9 x 10 x 17 inches. A shoulder bag that fits this size (or can squish into it) is definitely OK.
