Carry-on Limits

Hi! I'm flying out this weekend on Alaska Airlines/Delta. I'm a little confused about carry-on limits. It states 45" and then further down 22"x14"x9".
Can my carry-on be any deminsion as long as it fits the 45" or does it have to be 22"x14"x9"? Right now my measurements are 21"x11"x11".

Also, has anybody had problems with Space Bags (vaccum) expanding during flight?

Maybe it was supposed to read 45 pounds? I always use space bags when I'm forced to fly and if they were closed correctly I've never had then expand. I don't use the ones you have to vacuum shut in checked baggage, just the kind you roll to get the air out. My bags are usually packed pretty tight and I don't think the TSA has vacuums to reseal something if they open it.

On Delta I have never had a problem with a carry-on whose measurements added up to 45" no matter the specific dimensions. Actually I have seen MANY folks bring bags that were obviously more than 45" total and there was no problem as long as they still fit in overhead bins. I have never flown Alaska so I can't speak to their policy.

I have flown Delta the past 2 weeks. They have sizer boxes at the gates but I didn't see anyone using it. I think it's not obviously too big, it will probably get by.
