Hi - I don't fly much but I'm flying United on September 15th and i have a quick carry on question. I will be bringing my carry on suitcase plus I have a purse. What i don't know is - can I bring a canvas bag to carry books and magazines in? Is that allowed or are you only allowed one personal item and your carry on?
Thanks!

Check with your specific airline.

Most airlines have the rule of "one carry-on bag and one personal item." In your case, your carry-on suitcase would be your carry-on bag and your purse would be your personal item. So it seems that an additional bag you are carrying would not be allowed.

You are allowed only one carry-on and one personal item. I take a small canvas bag for my magazines and put my purse inside the canvas bag when I go thru the gate....the personal item should be small enough to fit underneath the seat in front of you.

What if I buy magazines and they're in a plastic bag - is that allowed or would I have to be able to fit it in my purse or vice versa?

I usually take a fanny pack or sling pack instead of a purse. To comply with the "one personal carryon" rule, I put the fanny pack/sling in my tote along with my book/magazine, camera, etc. That strategy has always worked out well for me.

I would buy a tote that is large enough for your purse and any other items that you might buy. That way you only have the 2 carryons that you are allowed, and you won't have to worry. Plus, you won't be trying to juggle so many items getting on/off the plane.

You are allowed to bring one item whose measurement falls within your airline's requirements to stow in the overhead compartment, and one personal item that will fit entirely under the seat in front of you, aboard the plane. This is an airline rule. If you purchase magazines before or after security and they are placed in a plastic shopping bag, either that bag has to go in your purse, or it has to go in your carry-on, or your purse has to go in the plastic bag or in your carry-on.

Excellent idea and advice that I think I'll take! Thank you!
