Carry on baggage question

Hi everyone,

My DH and I are taking a quick weekend trip to Disney next month, and since we will only be there for 3 nights, we are only going to take carry on luggage. I checked the carry on rules for Southwest, and I have a question about them:

Carryon Baggage
Per TSA regulations, carryon items are limited to one bag plus one small, personal item.
Personal-type items include purses, briefcases, cameras, food containers, or laptops (case included). Pet carriers are considered either a personal item or a carryon item.
Southwest Airlines limits carryon bag dimensions to 10 x 16 x 24 inches.

I was wondering if my DH brought a carry on suitcase, which I think is 20 inches, and then a back pack, would that be considered a "personal item"? I'm assuming it would be if I brought a back pack, because I could say it's my purse, but do men have the same rules? I'm hoping he can bring his small suitcase and a back pack!

Thanks! :)

Short answer: Yes. I bring a 20inch carry-on bag and a backpack. They don't care if it's a man or woman or even child for that matter. Each person gets the same allowance. The personal item must fit under the seat.

Just curious, though, why restrict yourself to carry-on only if you're on SW? They give you 2 checked bags each for free.

Thank you! I figured it was the same for men as it is women, but just wanted to be sure!

We're not checking luggage this time because when we come home, we have to leave the airport asap, so we don't want to waste 20 minutes or so waiting to get our luggage!
