Carry-on bag question

I have not flown in 9 years and a lot of things have changed since then. I have done a lot of reading and think for the most part our carry-on should be ok. Mostly it will contain medication, reading materials for the plane, a hairbrush, confirmation papers

what I am curious about is my Kindle, it will be in my carryon. I know you have to place a lap top in a separate container (I should only have to place my shoes in a bin..and the carry on bag right)

Do I place my kindle in its own bin or will it be fine in the bag? Are you allowed to place snacks in your bag? I'm guessing a bottle of water or soda would be No? How awful are the prices on soda and water on the other side of security?

Snacks are fine. I usually take a refillable water bottle. It is empty when I go through security and I fill it up once in the secure area. Get a Brita with a filter and the quality of water you get won't be an issue.

I leave my Kindle my bag and have never had an issue going through security.

No liquids (or gels) can go through security unless they are 3 oz or less and all must fit in a 1 quart, see-thru baggie.

I also suggest having a change of clothes in case your checked luggage doesn't make it to your arrival city at the same time you do.

And unless they are medications. Put those altogether and declare them to security so no one gets weird about it.



OP, if by chance you're randomly put in the TSA Pre-check line (it will say PREcheck), you do NOT have to take out the laptop or take off your shoes, or take out your 311 baggie (with the non-medicine liquids).

I always pack my swimsuit and one night's pajamas in my carry-on. I've experienced both significant flight delays and late delivery of my luggage from Magical Express. I was glad to have these essentials with me.

Thank you everyone so many helpful tips. I feel like I am more nervous flying now then I was the first 10 years ago lol And I am only nervous about doing something wrong not about flying in general.

Just a reminder, TSA is always implementing changes to policy and rules. Your kindle will be considered a laptop but if placed in a carry on or personal bag, you'll be fine. I work for an airline company and have seen TSA/Airline Companies react to Laptops and Tablets differently in different states. It all depends on the security team that's present. Always bring your essentials delays are common but lay over vary so much depending on timezone. No liquids over three ounces, exception being water and Gatorade.

I thought the only exception to the liquid rule was medicine (that had to be "declared"). You can get as much liquid as you like once you get through security.

I have actually been yelled at by TSA people (well, not yelled at, but spoken to) about leaving my tablet (iPad mini) in my bag. I started taking it out..force of habit from having a true laptop..and was told, quite loudly..'All tablets can stay in your bags!!!! Do not take them out."
So, a Kindle can stay in your bag. No liquid, or gel, over 3 oz. Medications can go through....even the liquids. I like to take them out and place them by themselves, just in case there is a question. Same for contact lens solutions..they can go through, but best to leave them out for a quick look-see.

Water and sodas aren't too expensive once you get through security.

Jackets, sweatshirts, shoes and belts come off. Some times you can get away with a pullover sweatshirt, other times not. I always just take it off..easier that way.

In my carry-on bag I have.....confirmation paperwork for both flight, transportation and resort stay. I have meds, and a quart baggie with small toiletries..just in case. I also have a change of clothes...at least underwear..and a swimsuit in the summer. You can never tell what will happen. The one time I didn't have my carry-on bag packed that way, I was diverted to a different airport and then had to go back to my originating airport...all without anything for the evening!! Figured I was going home, so what was the big deal! Live and learn.

Lots of incorrect information here.

Water and Gatorade are NOT exceptions to the liquids rule.

A Kindle, other ereaders and tablets are NOT considered laptops by the TSA.

I have no idea what you mean by airline companies. TSA runs security at airports and they make the rules, not the airlines. The rules are the same at all US airports, although sometimes rules may be tightened at certain airports due to security concerns.

I would not put anything I planned to use or eat in a carry on bag that is placed in the overhead bins. it can be almost impossible to get to them until plane lands. I would have snacks and tablet in a backpack that will fir under the seat in front of you. if you are in widow seat you would have to crawl over to get bag down to get stuff during flight and then again to put back for landing. most flights are full or nearly full. I second the change of clothes in carry on in case of delay with checked bag arrival.

I would never argue with the TSA agent about what the rules state, so I just put my kindle and ipad in my under the seat small personal bag so that it is easy to get to and remove if requested without having to open my carryon suitcase.
I also put my 311 bag in that small personal bag so that I have easy access to pull it out at security. I put it in my regular carryon at the gate.

That's exactly what I do. So much easier to just have the stuff that will have to come out, in my backpack!
