I just wanted to double-check because I'm confused easily.

Is a standard-size backpack small enough to be used as a carry-on on the plane? Not some big lunky real hiker backpack, but one like the kids use at school?

I thought surely they would be small enough, but since I've started shopping for luggage, the bags that are marked as carry-ons look smaller than a backpack.

If backpacks are too big, I gotta know so I can find something else to use!

Standard size is fine. I've take one on my last 3 trips. Easier on the back than a tote bag. I muse my DD's from H.S.

herc.

Go on your airline's web site. It will list the dimensions for carry-on luggage, and you can be sure that yours will work.

Standard backpacks work just fine. The ones from L.L. Bean are great as they have lots of pockets and can be monogramed.

Any time we take any sort of family vacation that requires flying, we carry on a regular school-sized backpack... never had an issue.

Cool, thank you!

We didn't actually own any "real" luggage (how embarrassing) and I've already picked up two suitcases, but I didn't want to buy carry-ons unless I needed to. I figured the kids could just use their backpacks from school, and we have a spare so that will take care of us fine.

Yep. I invested in a cheap $10 back pack that I use as my carry on and take it to the parks every day Works well since I always get handed things to carry throughout the day...sunglasses, water bottles, camera, tripod, sunscreen, misc meds, bandages, etc....
