We have a 1 BR @ OKW, but no car. I do not want to order groceries. We will only have carry-on bags for the flight. Can I carry the following onboard in a small softside cooler bag:

frozen hotdogs in the sealed 8 pack
frozen stouffers dinner
frozen pre-cooked taco meat in a ziploc baggy
sealed 8 oz package of deli turkey

I assume the following are fine: poptarts, cheese sticks, carrots, apples, bagels, multipack cereal, sealed package of tortillas, dried pasta noodles, dried tortellini, boxed mac/cheese (if I take the cheese powder out and put it with my 3oz ziploc baggy stuff)

thanks, Elaine

unless you can get from the door of your house, into your 1 bdrm within 4 hours...from a food safety point of view I certainly wouldn't try to transport frozen items or meats solely in a carry on.
YMMV

I pack the softside in my check-in luggage. The frozen food keeps everything frozen and it remains frozen. When in the 'belly' of the plane, it will be colder than the cabin.

I have taken frozen bacon, frozen cooked hamburger with the onion, spices already mixed in, cheese slices (not frozen but remain cold) and frozen pillsbury biscuits.

All are fine when we check in.

Also, having packed all that in my luggage, gives me room for the items I will purchase to take home :goodvibes

I dont think any of those are a tsa issue. Im not sure why you would need to take the powdered cheese from the mac n cheese box though? The question that comes to mind is - where will all your clothes be if you've got all that in your bag?

I work for an airline......none of the items you list should be a problem for you. TSA restricts liquids/gels in sizes larger than 3oz in carry on bags. The problem that occasionally occurs with bags packed with food is that they do not arrive with you at your destination. The food items then thaw, spoil, and stink! You would not believe how many people pack frozen fish in their suitcases.....

My suggestion is to check with your carrier regarding use of dry ice (most will allow small amounts in carry on or checked bags) and bring the food that would thaw onto the plane with you as your carryon. Dry/stable foods can go into checked bag.

Why not just buy this at Publix when you get there?

All of the dry items are fine, and the powdered cheese packet doesn't need to be separate. As for the frozen items, I would try & double pack them in a cooler. For instance, putting the items in to one of those silver "cooler" bags first, and then putting that into the cooler. Or put them in to a smaller cooler first, and then in to a larger one. You might consider adding a bag or 2 of frozen veggies to help keep the meat items cold. Hopefully, you don't have any layovers, because that would be too long of time & taking a chance with the food.

Also, if you're only taking carryons, do you really want to have a cooler? The resort store sells hot dogs & deli meat for sandwiches. Yes, they're more expensive, but in the long run it might be worth it.

thank you--I thought these things were OK. All cold items will easily fit into a soft-side cooler lunch bag. The hotdogs will serve as the ice pack. If we get delayed, etc., and food is beyond fridge temp, I will just toss. I don't need much, so not worth ordering groceries, and the DVC store does not have certain items like low fat hot dogs, pre-cooked taco meat. This is a "squeeze in" DVC trip b/c we have to be in FL for an event anyway, so I want to do it as cheaply as possible. thank you, Elaine

I did this in January (albeit not with taco meat and hot dogs)... I made a banana bread and picked up a loaf of bread and froze both!! then picked up my boars head cold cuts and packed around breads just before we left for airport and everything remained cold (banana bread was still frozen in middle when we arrived in our room almost 6 hours later)!

Good luck!

I did this carry-on
