carriers -- moby, beco, bjorn, ergo?

I'm glad I found this thread in my search. DD is 6mos. and wants to be held constantly...I am going crazy around here! I have never used a carrier with any of my other 3.
I am very petite, so I guess the Ergo would not be for me?

I'm looking for a carrier to use from about 6-12 mos.

Any places in NJ where they have a wide selection where I can bring DD and test some out?

The ergo can be used well into the toddler days. I also feel it is the best position for kids to be in. You can carry front, hip or back.

Ditto. The ergo company also insists that especially for infants, the ergo is much better on their little bodies than a bjorn.

The ergo fits all sizes of adults and is very adjustable. And very comfortable.

My son will be just over 2 when we go and right now is 32lbs and 36in tall.

I am only 5'4" so I dont think I could carry him in a carrier, but my husband is 6'4" he might.
Would my son fit in the Ergo?

As I noted above, I disagree. I hated the ergo for my petite frame. The beco was much better.

I read somewhere that the Beco is tight on the child's legs?

Also, regarding the Ergo, don't most older babies (6 mos +) prefer to be facing out??

I'm short as well (barely 5'1") and the ergo was great, and also worked for my 5'10" husband. As I said, try to find someplace where you can try them on and see what works best for you.

As for facing out, it really depnded on DS's mood. When he was clinging and crabby, I'd wear him on the front facing me and he could snuggle in close. Other times, I wore him on my back and he could look around. I think his favorite was a side carry, so he could see my face and see all around (alas, that was my least favorite - that's how it always works with kids ;) )

I agree with all of this. Except I'm just a little taller and my DH is only 5'9. No discomfort and is perfectly adjustable to both of us.

Okay wait, so the Ergo has 3 positions? Facing in, facing out on the hip, and then being worn on the back?

Trying to justify the price difference between the Ergo and Beco...

I replied earlier in the thread and figured I'd post again since I mentioned I was confused about what I was going to do.

I've been in contact with both Lillebaby and one of their approved suppliers. I am currently looking at the Lillebaby Complete SSC (the Complete, not the Nordic or Wearababy).

It seems to be made well for small mamas (it works well for taller people as well, but I'm tiny so that's what matters to me). It has a taller back than the Ergo so it would last further into toddlerhood, plus it's got a nice wide seat for good knee to knee support. It's got a foldable headrest, as well as a hood (DD doesn't like her head covered so our Boba isn't the best if she falls asleep). All of the snaps have padded protection between them and the carrier so there's less uncomfortable rubbing. The base snaps closed so smaller babies can sit correctly. It does a fetal hold for tiny babies, as well as forward facing in and out, hip, and back carries.

And, the coup de grâce, the Organic version is apparently more lightweight and cooler than the Ergo.

And that's ignoring their Air Flow version, which is so breathable you can actually see through it.

So, that's what I'm planning to use as my primary carrier while we are in the parks.

The Ergo can not be worn facing out.

Edit: Nevermind, I see what you are asking, I thought you said two carries, hip OR facing out. Yes, it can be worn facing in, hip, and back.

The Ergo faces your child in towards you whether you carry her on your front, hip, or back.

I love my Beco Gemini because in addition to those three positions, you can also front carry your child facing out. This was always DS's favorite position until he was about 20lbs and I switched to hip or back carrying. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Gemini is the only Beco model that allows forward facing front carry. I'm not as familiar with other carriers so I don't know if they also allow forward facing.

I carried DS at Disney for his first birthday trip (~18 lbs) and was very comfortable. Bonus: if he was forward facing, I didn't have to remove him for any rides because the safety bar could rest on his lap.

Correct, the Gemini is the only Beco model that can forward face out. Other carriers that can do it (ergonomically anyway) are the Pikkolo, Lillebaby (which I talked about above), and the Stokke.

The Beco Gemini hasn't been tight on DD's legs at all. I can't speak for the other beco models, though.

As for facing in or out..at 12 months, when we wear DD it is usually in a back carry, so she's facing in - but she can still see more.

We haven't done much with facing out, because even with ergo/beco it's still not good for them to face out for too long. if we go somewhere like the aquarium or disney, we will likely face out for a short while - but only in short bursts.

Even in a front carry facing inwards, we weren't asked to remove DD from the beco gemini on our trip. from reports I've read here, that may vary from Cm to CM, but i know we wore her facing in on at least Buzz lightyear and spaceship earth

I have the beco soleil - they cannot face out in the model - but she rides on my back a lot anyhow; so she is sort of facing forward.

I have not had issues with tight around her legs.

Oooohhhh a baby carrier thread - I'm in my element! I may have a slight collection... But they all serve a purpose - honest! ;)

When we went to Disney I restricted myself to a mere four slings. Ahem. A Didymos wrap which we used so often it was like a comfort blanket for my DS (he was 23 months then), a Kozy carrier (pretty mei tai), an Ocah wrap conversion (SO comfortable and easy!), a ringsling (fantastic for a toddler who tires out or to take with a pushchair for when you've parked your wheels as it packs so small) and another mei tai which brand I don't remember but it had a fantastic solarveil panel and hood to keep us cool.

Oh, OK, that's five :rotfl:

We were there for two weeks and they all got used! We will be going back when my new baby is of a similar age and I'll probably take three. Our 'comfort wrap' this time is loooonnng, too long for Florida, and I think one mei tai will do. We carry way way more than we ever use a pram or stroller.

I tried an Ergo for a day and really didn't get on with it at all :( I'm 5'4, so not tiny exactly. It kept slipping off my shoulders when I wore it on the front, and it didn't ever feel tight enough when on my back. I know it is a good carrier though, so worth a try!
I've also heard good things about the boba :)

Do you get the Connecta in the US at all? www.connectababycarrier.com They are so pretty and so comfortable, I find they fit a lot like a woven wrap, especially for a carrier with buckles. It was our 'dad sling' as it was easy enough for DH to use without my help ;)

Do you get slingmeets in America? It's a fab idea, basically mums with lots of slings arrange to meet up and share tips or help other new mums try out, as normally the only good carriers aren't available in shops.
