Carrie & Patrick’s Aulani Vow Renewal - 2/4/13 - Patrick's Outfit! New 6/13

That's really nice that the music is an actual part of the ceremony and not just part of the background. I can't say I'm a huge ukulele fan, but in the right context (with the right songs) it sounds like a really romantic touch.

And of course, Can't wait to see the Roots' photos of everything. They do such amazing work!

Yes! I am also thinking it would be fun to hear theme park tunes on the ukulele for a couple who was into that—like the Tiki Room theme or "Yo Ho A Pirate's Life for Me" or even "Grim Grinning Ghosts!"

Officiant

The Memories package includes the services of an officiant for your wedding or vow renewal. At first, I wanted to find a member of my denomination on the island to officiate for us, because I wanted the service to be more tailored, like our wedding was. My planner was totally open to this, and when I provided her with the name of the only one I could find on Oahu, she made contact. However, it turned out the woman was quite elderly and didn’t really understand the concept of a vow renewal or what her role would be, so we decided to go with Aulani’s officiant.

Aulani engages the services of Rev. Kimo Taylor. When I got in touch with him via email, he sent me his standard vow renewal services: one nondenominational vaguely religious one and then a nonreligious one. I was not crazy about either of them. They both seemed like he’d just taken a regular wedding ceremony and stuck the word “again” after any pledges or directives. They were also directed at crowds of guests, which would have sounded awkward for our tiny, guest-less ceremony, and had stuff about our “family” that didn’t apply cuz we don’t have kids. Plus, there were some ceremonial acts I wanted to take out (yes, even though they were nice Hawaiian traditions) because they seemed awkward—for example, we weren’t getting the leis, so the lei ceremony woulda looked pretty silly!

Rev. Kimo was open to my creating a hybrid ceremony from the two and adding my own elements, so I sat down and created a new one. I added a few quotations from our original ceremony, and I reworded the awkward bits that applied to services with kids and guests present. When I emailed it to him, Rev. Kimo wrote back that it looked great and that he’d follow along with it as he performed our ceremony.

So imagine my surprise during our vow renewal ceremony when he launched into all the generic stuff I’d cut out. I gave Patrick a funny look, and then my heart sank when Rev. Kimo skipped over the quotes I’d added too. As it turned out, he completely forgot we’d customized the ceremony, even though he’d emailed me just 2 weeks before to say that he’d received the one I sent. I guess he keeps files on each couple, and when he looked in ours that morning there was nothing about a custom ceremony, so he just grabbed the standard one.

I understand that it’s an honest mistake, and it only kinda bummed me out, but that’s because this was just a vow renewal. If this had been my real wedding, I would have FREAKED OUT! So my advice is, contact Rev. Kimo again a few days before the event to make sure he has all your requests noted. I feel dumb that I didn’t think to do this, but I guess I thought 2 weeks’ notice was enough.

Eek, what a shame that your officiant used the wrong service - it sounds like you didn't let it spoil your day though :)

This is a great thread, you really are sharing excellent information

Glad you like it! There's so little info out there about weddings and vow renewals at Aulani right now, that I want to share everything I know so others can see if it's a good fit. :goodvibes

Just joining in ! Love all the info !!

I would have freaked about the ceremony switch up - I'm glad you were able to keep your cool. LOL
Can't wait to read more

I know, right? It's the most important part of the whole day! Rev. Kimo felt bad about it and left me a very nice voicemail to apologize. My planner was devastated about the whole thing, but it was totally not her fault. She ended up having this amazing gift basket sent to our room, plus a plate of chocolate-covered strawberries, so that was nice!

I love all the pictures and the story so far...

How upsetting that your officiant messed up the ceremony though!! Sounds like you guys rolled with it, and didn't let it mess up your special moment which is great...but I bet you were so disappointed!!! :grouphug:

Can't wait to hear more!!

Brooke

Yeah, Patrick didn't even know, thank goodness. And then when he started reading the vows he'd written the night before, I was so moved that none of that other stuff mattered! :goodvibes

Hair & Makeup

Finding a cosmetologist on Oahu was tricky. There are pages and pages of search results in the category on Wedding Wire, but maybe only 2 pages’ worth are viable. The rest are names with no websites or websites that look like they haven’t been updated since 1995. I am also super-picky about makeup, probably even more than about hair, although I’m pretty picky about that too (see: plastered bangs + tiara combo). I particularly dread what I call the “pageant contestant” look that so many wedding makeup artists do: the lacquered, overdrawn nude lip; the heavy eyeliner; the strip of super-long fake lashes; the windshield-wiper swath of dark shadow in the crease; and the glare of frosted white shadow on the browbone.

My planner suggested I use a guy at the spa, which she said they would open as early as 6am so I could have hair and makeup done. But I wanted the convenience of getting ready in my room. Here are the samples of his work that she sent.

I narrowed the choices on Wedding Wire down to the one that had the smallest number of pageant contestant looks and crossed my fingers that it would be easy to steer her away from that look.

Her name is Sarah Obringer, and her site is www.whikdhawaii.com. She was very friendly and accommodating via email and even offered to do a Skype consultation. Her rate for in-room hair and airbrush makeup was $140, with a $50 deposit (4.71% tax is additional). There was no fee for having to come out at 4am, though I did give her $15 or $20 to cover parking at the resort on the day of (overnight costs $30, so I wanted to be on the safe side!).

And here are the two hair accessory options I bought from DK Designs Hawaii on Etsy (I couldn’t decide so I bought both!).

I think for makeup I just sent her photos of my wedding makeup and told her I wanted something similarly natural-looking.

On the day of the vow renewal Sarah actually showed up a few minutes early, which was great. I thought the light in that cavelike Aulani room was going to be a problem, but she set me up on a chair just inside the bathroom door and at least it was even. The biggest problem was that she couldn’t get her airbrush to work. She mentioned that she’d had an issue before at Aulani with a flat iron that didn’t work, and since the airbrush had worked at her house that morning, she thought maybe there was something weird with the wiring at the resort. She was pretty distressed about it, so I said regular makeup would be fine. It was heavier than I wanted, but there wasn’t really anything we could do...

We hit it off immediately—it turns out she lived in LA for a while, in the crazy-ornate Chinese-themed apartment building next door to Grauman’s Chinese Theater! (...I’d prolly better not tell you that the reason she left LA was that one of her neighbors committed a murder or you’ll NEVER come visit me!). She was really receptive to my directions/comments, which was a big plus after my experience with the makeup artist who did me up for our retro photo shoot at California Adventure the week before (I’d had to push to get her to use the colors I wanted, and then she didn’t do eye makeup anything like the pictures I’d sent her).

The only thing I didn’t like were the false eyelashes. Sarah wanted to do strip lashes, but I prefer individual lashes done just on the ends. She was game for it, but she didn’t trim them down to various lengths to incorporate them more naturally, so I just had a few huge butterfly lashes on the ends, which felt weird. We’ll see how they look in photos, though!

Just like on the wedding day, I got a little flustered toward the end when I realized I hadn’t left enough time to get into my dress, but she was so easygoing about it. (You’d think I would have learned by now to schedule at least 2 ½ hours to get ready—maybe 3!) She quickly and quietly packed up all her stuff, dropped in the big pink hair flower, and vanished just as the Roots arrived.

I only have a couple preview photos, so I won’t really know how much I liked my hair and makeup til I can see more of it, but here’s what I have so far.

So far, I’m pleased. I think my eyebrow color is a little weird, but the important part is my face is the same color as my neck—LOL! Also, I got a ton of compliments on my hair, including one later that day from a fellow spa-goer who was a DUDE!

I’ll be sure to come back here and add more photos when I get them.

Personally I think you looked beautiful Carrie! Of course I may be biased because we're friends :thumbsup2

Having your neck a different color from your face just adds dimension... :rolleyes1 LOL! One day I will have a vow renewal and my neck AND face will be the same color! :yay: I was so rocking the "pageant contestant" eye at my wedding (although one of my husband's brothers later referred to it as, um, let's just say a woman whose career choice wouldn't make Mom or Dad proud...).

I think you looked beautiful!! $140 is a pretty good price, it seems, for her to come to your room for your hair and makeup. I love your hair flower! I was supposed to have an ivory one put in, but my hair/makeup girl forgot to put it in and it didn't cross my mind until after we were married .

Same thing happened to us with Rev. Jack Day at our VR last year. So disappointing when the actual ceremony goes wrong! Glad that the custom vows saved it for you though ... I had to stop Rev. Jack during our ceremony to remind him we were doing our own as he had launched into his!

Carrie, you looked BEAUTIFUL!! :cloud9: I'm all caught up and love that you're breaking down the options and detailed info for all of us here hoping for a VR one day! I just have to say that I've been around and was a lurker back in the days of your PJ, was totally in love with your wedding, and now your VR. Congrats to you and Patrick for 5 years, and best wishes for many more! :wizard:

I think your hair and makeup looked great! Especially LOVE the hair!

You looked classy AND beautiful! :goodvibes:flower3:

;)

Your hair and makeup looks beautiful, very natural and pretty :)

I've only had my makeup professionally done once in my life, it was a rehearsal session for my own wedding and I looked dreadful!

I asked for natural as I wear very little make up on a day to day basis, but I ended up looking like I was about to hit the stage in Vegas!

Needless to say I was glad I had a rehearsal and I didn't go back on my wedding day

Loved the preview pics! I agree, the hair and make up look fabulous! (but you always do!)

Carrie, you looked gorgeous! So lovely. I love the pink (fuchsia?) hair flower with the aqua necklace. I'm following along on this thread now too!
