Carrie & Patrick’s Aulani Vow Renewal - 2/4/13 - Patrick's Outfit! New 6/13

Ceremony Venues

When we first started planning, there were numerous wedding venues around Aulani that I was planning to document here. Then they realized they had to overhaul a bunch of stuff at the resort to meet guests’ needs, and suddenly almost half these venues were wiped out.

The biggest shocker is that Makaloa Garden—the lawn with the gorgeous ocean view seen in all of Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings’ promotional materials and the site of the “Dream Wedding” they staged live on an episode of Live with Kelly—is now a dirt patch, on its way to being consumed by the pool area expansion. This means that there are now no private venues with an ocean view, which is almost incomprehensible to me. I mean, who’s going to go all the way to Hawaii to get married and not do it someplace with an ocean view? (I dunno, maybe locals are less cracked on the idea than we are.)

When the dust clears, there will be five ceremony venues left: two for Memories events and three for Wishes. Two of those are directly on the public beach, where they’ll rope off a little area between the sunbathers; one is yards away from the diners at ‘AMA ‘AMA Restaurant; one is at the Jacuzzi in the main pool area; and one is on the lawn overlooked by the rooms of the Ewa tower. If you’re hoping for absolute privacy, Aulani is not the place for you.

In addition to the Memories venues, I’ll put in photos of the Wishes venues just so you can see all the options.

Memories Collection Venues

Alohi Point (a.k.a., The Jacuzzi)

I actually think Memories brides get the better deal here with access to Alohi Point because it is reasonably private, unlike either of the Wishes venues with ocean views. Initially I had nightmares of kids in water wings streaking between us as we tried to say our vows, while behind us lifeguards led guests in Pool Bingo as “YMCA” blared from the speakers. But if you can do your ceremony early enough in the morning (the official time is 9am, but we requested 8am), there really isn’t anyone around, and of course they rope off the Jacuzzi area for you. We ended up having only one onlooker, a nosy lady who parked herself at the bottom of the stairs next to our photographers. Patrick didn’t even notice her.

Memories Beach Location
I don’t know what they’re going to call this one when it’s ready, or why it’s different from the beach location for the Wishes Collection, which is just a few yards away. Both are spots on a public beach that Disney will clear for you, but I’d recommend doing an early-morning ceremony if you don’t want a bunch of tourists in Speedos beached on either side of you.

...And that’s it for Memories Collection ceremony locations.

Wishes Collection Ceremony Venues

Now that Makaloa Garden is gone, the next closest thing is Halawai Lawn, the site of the Starlit Hui two nights a week. It’s in a relatively private location (I mean, except for being directly underneath a bunch of hotel rooms) on the far side of the resort, between Aulani and whatever will eventually be built on the property next door. However, it does not have the ocean view one sort of expects with an Hawaiian wedding, or ANY view.

Wishes Beach Location
I’m sure they’ll come up with a fancy name for this venue once the construction’s done, but it’s basically a spot on the sand directly between the two rock piles out in the bay.

‘AMA ‘AMA Patio
For my money, this is now the best Wishes ceremony venue if you want an ocean view, but it’s not super-private. Although they will rope off the patio for you, it is directly below the open-air restaurant ‘AMA ‘AMA, so you’ll have plenty of potentially boisterous onlookers. It’s also not huge, so larger weddings won’t fit here.

Wishes Collection Reception Venues

Indoor Wishes receptions are held in the small conference center. The outdoor reception venues are the Halawai Lawn (pictured in the previous post) or the Kipuka Lawn and Courtyard, which are adjacent to the conference center and not directly accessible from the Halawai Lawn.

Kipuka Courtyard
Disney’s website bills this as one of the Wishes ceremony locations, but my planner said nobody really uses it for that. It’s mostly for cocktail hours and receptions.

Up Next: Our “Reception”!

Great photos of the venues
They give you a really good idea of the size and views from the various spaces :thumbsup2

Looking forward to following along! An Aulani vow renewal sounds ridiculously romantic, and something I wouldn't mind considering for a big anniversary down the line. Although, I should probably finish planning my Disney wedding before moving onto a Disney vow renewal.

The Aulani reception venue options seem pretty typical, but the ceremony locations are a little surprising. No private beach location, really? Hmm. The Memories brides do seem to get the better choices though.

o0o0o0o00oo How exciting and pretty! Can't wait to follow along on your journey Carrie! :goodvibes

Poor Patrick always has me standing there needling him: "Could you get it from this angle? How about a wide shot? Did you shoot that?" Guess I should just get my own dang camera! :rotfl:

Wow! These photos make me want to get married there one day!

Oooh! I hope you do so I can crash! :hyper:

Hey, but it's the promise of a vow renewal that keeps the post-wedding blues at bay! :thumbsup2

Yeah, I know it's tough for them because the beach is public and there's only so much beach-front property to work with up at the resort, but they sorta put all their eggs in one basket with that wedding garden that's now going to be a pool... whoops!

great pics of all the locations! i kind of thought it was a little weird to have a location in front of the jacuzzi! but the view behind it is beautiful!

Yeah, I had a lot of trouble with that too. It wasn't til I got there (and saw the alternatives) that I started to be OK with it. But it really sounds on paper like you're going to be surrounded my little kids in floaties! :rotfl:

”Reception” Planning

Like the Memories Collection at Walt Disney World, Aulani’s doesn’t include any kind of reception or even a cake. I knew I had to have cake for our vow renewal, so I asked about the price for adding on a “cake and Champagne”-style reception like they do for Escape weddings.

Are you ready...?

Five HUNDRED dollars! They wanted a $500 food and beverage minimum for four people to eat cake and drink sparkling cider. And let me refresh your memory on where we’d be doing this:

P1100473.jpg

So we went with Elena’s other suggestion, which was to order a cake and have it delivered to brunch at ‘AMA ‘AMA restaurant after the ceremony. We asked her to make our reservation for 10am, which gave us 2 hours to take photos around the resort with the Roots.

Here’s what the restaurant looks like. When I get my photos back I’ll have shots of the primo table they gave us, and the cake!

I thought about taking the Roots out to a luau later that night as another sort of reception, but, as I detailed in this section of my trip report, the more I read about luaus, the less I wanted to attend one. Instead we went to the free Starlit Hui, held on the Halawai Lawn where they do Wishes weddings.

P1100110.jpg

I’d read about how people line up 30 minutes or more early so they can get a good spot to put down their mat for the show. I decided to ask my planner if it would be possible for them to reserve a spot for us, on account of our vow renewal and all, and she worked with the entertainment team to make it happen. When we got there, we asked for the cast member Elena told us about, and she took us to a mat they’d set down for us in the front row! Originally we’d been asked if we wanted mats or chairs, but I didn’t wanna be the jerk sitting in the only chair in front of scores of people on mats—lol!

Hopefully I’ll have some of the Roots’ photos of the Starlit Hui for my report when I get to that part. It was tricky to shoot such fast-moving action!

And speaking of photography....

Photography

The Memories Collection comes with 1 hour of photography and all your photos posted online. If you want a disc of digital images, it’s an extra $500, or you can purchase individual photos. Photography is provided by local vendor Bianca Photography.

You can see examples of her work back in my “locations” post above, under Alohi Point. Here are a few more samples they sent.

Because our vow renewal guests happen to be world-class wedding photographers, we just told our planner we’d skip the included photography. (There’s no package credit if you do this.)

Music

The Memories Collection package comes with your choice of either a guitarist or a ukulele...ist. We felt like choosing the ukulele was a no-brainer, this being Hawaii and all. As to what he should play, we just asked for a selection of traditional Hawaiian tunes. Music was such a HUGE deal to me with our wedding, that it was nice to not really care this time around.

Actually, there was one thing I cared about: I was 99% certain that at some point the ukulele player would bust out that medley of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “What a Wonderful World” (I’m pretty sure it’s required of them the way electric guitarists always have to play “Stairway to Heaven”!), which depresses the H out of me and Patrick. So the first thing that went into my BEO was “DO NOT PLAY Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World.” Caps included. It worked!

You can see our ukulele player in this shot.

BiancaPhoto1.jpg

He turned out to be one of the best things about our ceremony. I’d been a little worried about it being too short and not, well, ceremonial, since we weren’t exchanging rings or doing most of the other stuff you do in a wedding ceremony. But he worked the music in as a main component of the ceremony, not just background music before and after. There was a break in the ceremony where he serenaded us with a couple of songs, including “A Whole New World”, my only favorite Disney tune, which surprised and delighted me (he’d sneakily asked Patrick what my favorite was while they waited for me to walk down the “aisle.”) We even sang along a little! Because I’m so picky, I held my breath to see what Disney tune he’d play next, but thankfully it was one I like, “You’ll Be In My Heart” from Tarzan.

At the end of the ceremony, he played another song and then wished us heartfelt congratulations. Very classy!

I adore the sound of ukulele music !

That would have just made my day :)

Can't wait to see the photos that Roots took for you

He looks pretty handsome!!!!!!

And after looking at Roots photography, it makes anything else look like garbage!

I have to agree with this statement.

After seeing Carrie's amazing pic's along with the Roots website and blog, we decided to use them for our Jan 2014, Wishes Wedding. We just sent the agreement in today.

Beautiful! Can't wait to see more photos from the Roots, they rock. And I love that your ukulele player was so awesome!
