My mom wants a carpet cleaner for Christmas. I own a Hoover something or other that is terrible and a waste of the money that I spent on it. After doing a little research, a highly recommended Steam Vac is the Hoover SteamVac with Clean Surge F5914-900.

I've also been reading about some Bissells as well...

Everyone I read about has some good reviews as well as some very poor reviews. I'd just hate to buy something and have it stop working within a year of purchase like mine did.

Can anybody here offer any suggestions for a good carpet cleaner?!

it's so funny that you posted this. i almost asked the same thing last night but didn't do it yet!!!
i'm thinking of buying an oreck carpet cleaner. i have an oreck vacuum that i really like.

Don't waste your money, give her a couple gift certificates for a local carpet cleaner. The home owned ones are crap. If you do decide to get one tell her not to use any soap with it, just hot water. They don't pick up the water very well and if you use soap that residue stays in the carpet and attracts dirt.

We are renting one this Sat. We want to buy one as well however not sure of which one.

My sister has one that is a workhorse. I will have to find out the brand.

I had a Hoover SteamVac. It was okay and did the job I needed it to do. However, emptying the dirty water tank and cleaning the front housing (pet hair) was a pain. I always dripped from filling the clean water tank and taking it to the machine, and taking the dirty container to be emptied.

Last year I bought a remanufactured Bissell ProHeat at Big Lots. It was $99. I like the design of the Bissell much better. The clean water bladder is inside the dirty water tank, so only one "unit" to carry around. It is much easier to fill and empty than the Hoover. The cleaning solution has a separate tank, so no measuring.

Thank you so much for the recommendations so far! My Hoover leaks the water and detergent out of the bottom of the canister, but it cleans the carpet.

I'll take any other suggestions or recommendations before I make a final purchase. I'd love to just get her gift cards, but she'd probably only be able to get the carpets cleaned once or twice. She had borrowed my cleaner for a bit and then tried my aunt's, which she liked better.

I have the Bissell Proheat 2x and I adore it! With a cat and a dog in the house, it has been a lifesaver. It really works Very very well! And it is super easy to fill and empty!
