I never realised carpet is so expensive. I am redoing my house and started with my daughters room and her room is 13ft 6 in x 11 ft and it is going to be $500. Thats alot of money for a 7 year olds room. :confused3

Ah yes...do your homework and start your shopping. It took us 9 months to finally find a carpet installer that would give us a fair price.
Anyplace with a building is going to be more. We went with installers that did not have overhead and ended saving almost $8,000.
We did our whole house which will be cheaper to do it that way (instead of room by room) because of the way you have to order carpet. Don't ask me to explain, cause I don't get it fully.

Quality carpet can be expensive but if you choose something neutral and take care of it then it will be worth the investment. Your DD will probably be off to college before you'll need to replace it. If she wants something trendy you can always get same throw rugs to go over the carpeting.

I thought that it was going to cost us $300 or $400 to recarpet our family room. The room is about 16 x20. It ended up over 1000. I think I had such a low estimate in my head because it just sounded better.

I bought my house new, w/o carpet. 2400 SF. That is what I paid to have my whole house carpeted. I can't imagine saving that much money. Your house must be HUGE, or you have really great carpet.

Not only do the get you for the carpeting, but if you want anything more than "standard" (read, "crappy") padding, that's gonna run you even more. I have to do my house this spring (luckily I live in a glorified shoebox) and I'm not looking forward to it.

Same here. My son had literally ironed the carpet in our living room so it had to be replaced. Home Depot  was having a "sale", so we got an estimate, about $1100 for a 12x20 room. We decided to hold off until we got our basement finished too. We didn't go back to home depot, but to a "carpet guy". It was about $900 for our family room through him, so $200 less than HD on sale. AND I know we got better installation too. But, our carpet is SOOOOOOO nice. I just love walking on it with bare feet and it's just beautiful too. I've never had carpet this nice before. So worth every penny to us. Especially since my youngest will be crawling around on it soon.

We bought the cheapest carpet we could for a 12X12 room in our new apartment (we really did not want to deal with the hardwood floors) and it cost about $80 for the cheapest stain resistant carpet we could find.

Wow...was that installed, or just a remnant that you put down (not actually tacked in place)? I need to shop with you!

We have 3004 sq ft (minus 2 bathrooms we didn't do). We also did hardwood, the whole downstairs. It cost us $15,400 to do flooring.
Our carpet was $4.20 per sq ft, hardwood was $7.00 sq ft.
(GASP!)

So needless to say when we went house shopping in Texas the first thing we calculated was flooring. If it needed flooring we ruled it out. We ended up buying an new inventory home. Tile & hardwood, lots of upgrades.

Me? We had it cut, but we put it down ourselves. We could have gotten padding but decided not to bother since when/if we ever move out, the landlord will want hardwood floors showing again. We did not think hardwood would be a great idea with two dogs and two rolling office chairs. The room we put the carpet down in is our "office" / dog room.

It's not hideously ugly or anything either. You can see it in the picture in my sig I think...

You can figure about $20 a sq yd for a starting point, including installation. Being that it is in a bedroom, I would not spend much more than $20 a yard. It won't be a high-traffic area where you would want higher quality carpet.

I used to work as a sales rep for a carpet manufacturer. There are a lot of different factors in pricing carpet. Nylon, for instance, will cost more mainly because the raw materials are more expensive, but holds up the best of the man-made fibers.

We did our whole house which will be cheaper to do it that way (instead of room by room) because of the way you have to order carpet. Don't ask me to explain, cause I don't get it fully.

Many installers will have a minimum labor charge (I know the ones that Home Despot use do), which is only a factor with small jobs like one room. Some retailers may play games with numbers. There's one here locally that I went to for a competitive shop once. They gave me this quote but said that if I went for more carpet than what I needed the total would be less. I don't know if they keep the waste and sell it as a remnant or what, but it didn't make sense to me.

Mystery Machine, was that price carpet only, or did that include pad & installation. If carpet only, sounds like you got top of the line.

That's because, no matter what, you're going to have a seam and some waste. Carpet comes in either 12' and 15' widths, and some plushes only come in 12'. There are some in 13.5' width but not many. Even though you only need 320 sf, you will need anywhere from 384 sf to 480 sf to avoid a T-seam.

Not only do the get you for the carpeting, but if you want anything more than "standard" (read, "crappy") padding, that's gonna run you even more.

True, but higher grade padding can increase the life of the carpet. I don't recommend anything less than 6 lb rebond for cut pile and 7 or 8 lb high density rebond for berber. If someplace is advertising free padding, check the quality of the free padding. That's one good thing I can say about HD -- their standard pad is the 6 lb pad, which is the upgrade at other places.

That was carpet, pad & installation. The carpet was not "top" of the line but it was above average... 100% DuPont Continuous Filament Tactesse Nylon..."Wunda Weve by Mohawk
We still have the sample here. Going to lay it out for the potential buyers of our house.

You did good. The carpet is definitely not hideous! I don't blame you covering the hardwood with the carpet (keeping the pups in mind!). My pups are the reason I have to get new carpet. One had a real problem with housebreaking, and the house came with a light gray carpet...enough said. I think I want to go with a dark blue throughout, but I'm not 100% sure yet.

Obi-Wan Pinobi - That's a great bunch of info, and I'm going to have to bookmark this thread for future reference.

Dodger's not fully housebroken yet so we kept that in mind when we went with a dark color and the stain resistant kind. ;) He's had a few accidents but so far, no reminders have been left after we cleaned it up.
