We need to replace the carpet in our family room. This is the most used room in our house. I'm looking for something durable but comfortable. I have a daycare in my home and this is where most of our activity takes place however it is not exclusively used for daycare. As a family, we spend most of our time in this room as well. My youngest DD is disabled and spends a lot of time laying on the floor. She can "army crawl". We currently have berber (put in quite a few years ago) but it's still a little rough on her elbows/forearms.

Any suggestions?

I am not a "carpet expert" but I just ordered Martha Stewart carpet from the Home Depot. I liked the warranties/weight of the carpet better than some of the other brands out there and it is made by Shaw.

Can't give much advice on carpet, but I can tell you not to skimp on the pad. We bought a cheap pad when we didn't realize the difference.

So true. Padding definitely is very important.

We paid a lot for the padding that we have in there now. It came with a "lifetime" warranty but that was kind of a joke. Carpet stores go in and out so fast, that when we started to notice a difference in the well worn areas compared to those under furniture, we couldn't find anyone that would honor the warranty.

We won't skimp on the padding but I doubt that we'll fall for the lifetime warranty pitch again.
