I want to give Stanley Steemer a try - do they do a good job. They would charge $125 vs. $385 paid to the local guy who really made my carpet look brand new.

Tipping - how much?

Thanks.

Make sure that the quote that you received from Stanley Steamer includes everything. DS works as a carpet cleaner. I know that a lot of the "big name companies" quote a low price but once they get to your house they tell you that only includes very basic services - but you need.... then they tell you how much you will have to pay to have it done "right." DS gets a lot of calls from customers who have had "big name companies" clean their carpets and he has to go back and re-clean. Sometimes you get what you pay for.

I had one in that charged per room - but that didn't include the hallways between the rooms. But I found a local place that doesn't use chemicals, so I'm happy.

:goodvibes

They also tried to sell me a "finishing" coat, without it the cleaning wouldn't stay "clean". They are high pressure sales-be prepared.

marlasmom....I believe we use the same phone book and possibly use the same cleaning people. Be interested in hearing who you select and how good a job they do. I've been telling DH I'd love to get carpets cleaned before Christmas (having lots of people in) and I've stalled simply because I'm unsure who to call.

We've had really good luck with Chem Dry. Steam cleaning isn't an option for us because of my husband's allergies. The last thing we need is mold growing in our carpet in the dead of winter when we can't open up the windows to circulate the air.

I luv Epcot - are you near me? It would be nice to have a neighbor. We used Miller - only five rooms and small hall. They did a perfect job - carpet looked brand new - got out animal stains - everything. But expensive - first he said $300 and then he said he hadn't seen another bedroom - and he wasn't mad that I might have tried to hide it (almost threw him out then and there) and raised his price to $385. No teflon either. I might try somebody called Wright based on what people are saying about Stanley Steemer. Miller wanted $30 to clean two relatively small cornices. They did clean the baseboards and even moved the tv away from the wall and cleaned behind it - the wall I mean. The tv makes it filthy.

My cleaning lady is an individual. I used to have the Cleaning Authority and was never really satisfied. I'm not totally satisfied with her - but she is much better than the Cleaning Authority and at least I know who I am getting and don't worry about losses. She is looking for more work. I actually don't know her phone number - my dd does - she found her through the hospital she works at and every time I ask her for it she says she'll try to find it but somehow doesn't get it to me. She will be at my house December 7 and you could call her. PM me and let me know if you want my phone number or if you want to give me yours.

My mother used Stanley Steemer to clean her upholstered furniture and was happy. She's never used them for the rugs though.

For years I had my carpets professionally cleaned. About four years ago, I decided I would try the Rug Doctor. These are heavy duty units that scrub and retract the hot water using their cleaner. This unit did a better job than any professional that I have had in the house. The carpets were drier, I could spend time on a particular area that I was concerned about and go over it until I felt it was sufficiently dry. My toy poodle had a couple of accidents in the den so I bought the Simple Solution rug shampoo. It worked beautifully. I used Scotch Guard for Carpets as recommended by the installer and I was very pleased.
