Carnival Panorama passengers being held onboard in Long Beach

I'm not worried about getting the virus; I'm worried about being quarantined
Thats the biggest concern in this house as well. We aren’t in the elevated risk category, but you don’t get paid when you get confined to a ship and you have other responsibilities. I just came off the Dream and I was sweating debark because so many people were coughing onboard and appeared sick.

Still no update! The lack of info to the passengers on all of these ships is inexcusable!
It's not Carnival's fault. I'm sure they are as stressed as all the passengers. We'll at least the passengers waiting to board are stressed. The ones on the ship are probably self-medicating with beer and martinis. I know that's is what I'd be doing.

The government is slow and has no responsibility to tell you anything. I’m not surprised by that at all.

I know they have no responsibility to do anything, but they could act like decent human beings for once. They had enough time to have a press conference before talking to the ship's captain :confused3

I was amazed that the people on Grand Princess found out what was going on through the news, instead of the government :sad2:

I think that’s a product of how fast news from the ships gets to social media. People are recording captains announcements or live streaming them. The government wanted the world to hear the announcement from the US officials instead of a British captain over a loudspeaker (and couldn’t control how the captain phrased it). The whole situation sucks, but I sort of see why the announcement went this way to Avoid any miscommunication.

Update at 9:45pm Pacific, passenger tested negative for covid-19. They will disembark all passengers Sunday morning and the next cruise will be cut short one night (dropping Mazatlan port stop).

Yes, that is GREAT news! And looks like the passengers on the Grand Princess will be disembarking in Oakland tomorrow.

That's not entirely true, it is up to your employer. I know of at least a couple of people from the DP that were paid for their quarantine times. But I would guess as time goes on, these instances will be less and less common.

We are self employed in this house. There is no sick leave or paid time off. The US government does not have to pay you lost wages for your time in quarantine. Not to get too deep into the legal arguments here, but in terms of suing the government for lost time and wages, or for release from confinement, there’s really no winning case law. A hearty trip interruption clause might cover a few days, but hardly the loss we would incur from a bungled quasi quarantine that lasts for better 14 days. And, I am sorry, but I don’t know what the GP is, you’ll have to explain the abbreviation.

This is literally why we cancelled on June cruise. I get that in relative numbers of ships being held up for quarantine vs ships out there on sailings, its small. But I would have been stressed over it the entire trip.
Honestly, I would have thought that they would have learned from the DP incident, but they really haven’t. I’m glad to read that they debark soon, but that doesn’t end the story for them. Granted, I would prefer quarantine at home or on land to continued contacts and exposure at sea, but its a whole new world of different BS awaiting them.

GP is a typo, Diamond Princess or DP is what I meant to type. Sorry about that.

You originally said "Thats the biggest concern in this house as well. The way you worded it was a sweeping generalization that people wouldnt get paid. All I said was that this was not necessarily true, some employers have opted to pay their quarantined employees. Had you said that *I* wouldnt get paid because I am self employed I wouldnt have said anything. I certainly didnt mean that I felt people were entitled to sue for payment.

This is why we cancelled our May DCL Cruise. I’m done teaching in early May when the semester ends but my kids still have school until mid June, my husband has a regular 12 month job, and the possibility of quarantine is not one I want to chance. I’m not worried about us getting sick but I am worried about quarantine due to someone else on the ship being sick. I’m also worried about who will care for our pets if we can’t make it home as scheduled, what happens to our post-cruise reservations if we are quarantined, what happens to our flights home if we are quarantined, and the multiple repercussions for my kids who will likely end up with truancy letters after a quarantine (after 10 absences, our district sends truancy letters and we planned our trip so that they would hit exactly 10 if we allowed for 5 days of illness during the year before our trip).

GP is general public. The state of California I know is encouraging people to fill for unemployment and or short term disability.
