Carnival Liberty engine room fire

Now that I think about it yes. I think she was in the Caymans. one of her back up generators failed not long after the Triumph and they flew the passengers home as a precaution and took the ship straight to Freeport.

I take it back. It was the Dream in St Maarten. The Legend lost her propulsion and limped home the day before that.

If I am not mistaken, as you mentioned above as to a easy cause to see, *a parted fuel line* was the cause of the Triumph fire .

I have a feeling there will not be any news on what caused the fire until at least Tomorrow.

The important part is, no one was hurt.

At least.

On the briteside, Carnival has learned from their past transgressions, and not only does it appear no one was hurt, but everything worked.

As of 830 passengers were re boarding the ship.

Sorry, my battery died. For the last hour, Carnival was passing out food to those who chose to stay in the port versus going to the Marriot. Carnival also went into the cabins of those who needed their medications and they gave them to them while we waited. The all clear was given around 8:00 and my spouse and I and our two friends were the first four passengers back on ship. Those who chose to go to the Marriott have not arrived yet. I just want to say that although it was not the day we planned, Carnival did a great job in trying to care for us. Crew members were walking all around port with ice water. They were asking us if we were doing ok. Two trucks full of palates of bottled water was brought in about 5:00. Carnival also brought in pizza at that time. Once the kitchen staff was allowed back on, Carnival brought out hot food which consisted of fried chicken, dinner rolls, burritos and I think burgers from Guys burgers. No announcement has been made of when we are officially leaving St Thomas or if our itinerary will be modified at all. My best guess is that Carnival will make an announcement once all passengers are back on board and we leave.

Wow! This is crazy, but I spent the weekend at St Thomas and stayed at the Marriott. When we were leaving for the airport, we drove by the port and was wondering why so many people were leaving the ship. I guess I got my answer. I hope everyone was safe.

So far its seems everyone is ok.

Heres the latest from onboard:

"We have a letter in our cabin that states we will not be leaving St Thomas until at least 8:00am tomorrow morning. We have to go to Barbados next since we have passengers disembarking and new passengers embarkng. Beyond that, there is no further information as to how our itinerary will be modified. At the moment, Carnival has opened the restaurants and is providing free wifi and free in cabin phone service. "

CARNIVAL LIBERTY STATEMENT
September 7, 2015 – 9 pm EDT

While docked in St. Thomas today Carnival Liberty experienced an engine fire that was extinguished by the ship’s automated suppression system. There were no injuries to guests or crew. All guests remained ashore through this evening while the ship's technical systems were evaluated. Presently, all hotel services including air conditioning, elevators, toilets, galleys, etc. are fully functional.

...
Crew was permitted to reboard at approximately 5:30 p.m. EDT to prepare for the anticipated embarkation of guests. At approximately 8 p.m. EDT the U.S. Coast Guard gave permission for guests to reboard.

Dinner is being served in the main dining rooms and Lido, and a variety of entertainment and activities are available.

A team of experts is in the process of conducting a deeper technical assessment of the affected engine room that is expected to be completed in the morning. At this time it has not been determined when the ship will depart St. Thomas.

We apologize to our guests for the inconvenience and appreciate their patience."

I hope the rest of your cruise is normal. It is great that no one was hurt.

All I can find this morning is that the vessel is still alongside and they are still inspecting the damage. It is not unusual for it to take time to inspect, short of the broom closet fire, these mechanical, electrical and computer systems all have to be checked. They are complicated and it takes time.

The news showed video of last night with some people going to the hospital, but that may not have been directly due to the fire and more heat, etc. on the pier.

It has been announced that the vessel will stay alongside today and passengers will have a port day. Carnival is putting $150.00 in each passengers onboard account to cover meals last night.

There is supposed to be a decision later today as to how the cruise will proceed.

I'm doing laundry and housework. While the current circumstances may not be exactly what the cruisers wanted, I'd take extra money and an extra day in St. Thomas over what I'm doing. :)

BTW, the latest update at 12:36 EST over on CC from the passenger who has been giving updates on this whole thing, said the US Coast Guard is doing an inspection of the engine room right now. Fingers crossed they'll be on their way this afternoon

Hi Texas......getting ready for the big move?

I thought the $150 was pretty nice myself!

The USCG and I am sure class surveyors and hull and machinery engineers/surveyors have been there all morning. Based on what the surveyors say, the USCG will say whether they sail or not. They were apparently testing the mains earlier this morning which is a good sign.

At 4:00 pm, the captain will update all guests as to how the cruise will proceed in the future. Guests that embarked in Barbados are asked to meet in the Victoria Lounge at 9:30 for further information. The cruise director is in the process of finalizing the fun times today and the shore excursion team is putting together tours for any guest that would like to go on one. Since 7:00 am, the engines have been on and off intermittently but have not been running since the announcement.

I spoke to three crew members that said the Liberty was moved by its own propulsion. Bare in mind, that the ship only moved half a length to accommodate the two ships that arrived this morning. I was told that one of the six engines was affected by the fire last night, but no official statement has been made by the captain or the cruise director. Carnival is.providing passengers free shuttle service to the downtown area for any guest that wishes to explore the city

Yes and no. The move will be next summer, after the oldest boy graduates from High School. I'm doing what you have to do after living in a house 13 years - going drawer to drawer and closet to closet and throwing stuff out!

Yes, the $150 each was just to cover any expenses incurred on-shore yesterday. I dare say nobody went on an eating and drinking binge in the few hours they were off the ship unexpectedly so they're already ahead financially. They were supposed to get an update around 4 today so we'll see. That thread, just like most of them on CC, has gone off the rails and is getting difficult to read!

I agree. Out of the 22 pages on the mobile version Id say about 1/4 actually pertains to the Liberty with the rest being the usual drama.

Just looked. As of 420 they are still waiting on the announcement of what comes next.

I agree with both of you folks.....its like WWII. They are debating about the meaning of the Word *panic* and fighting about someone's MOM the last I looked. Hooo yes and another person was talking about pumping the fuel into shore tankers so the ship could be *tugged*.

and I though the drama gets heavy here...LOL

Texas, I remember cleaning out my parents home when the passed, they lived there 55 years and my Dad was a pack rat!

Truck, I guess anything could happen, with a main down they may even *tugged* her to a repair yard.

They have moved her 1/2 ship length up the pier to make room for other vessels. coming it.

I was just looking and noticed the person over there saying you can get the bends from co2. Im posting over there in a minute with a chair and whip. Good lord. I think theres a good 50% of misinformation on that thread easy.

I saw that too on her tugging. The op over there wasn't sure other then he felt some vibrations and found out later that they used her thrusters to keep her to the pier while a tug nudged her a little bit to make room.

I was thinking about the trucks and if there not for spilled fuel which is entirely possible, it could be CO2 trucks to refill the CO2 bottles they used to fight the fire. Not my first choice in a suppressant but they didn't ask me.
