Reports coming in of a fire in the engine room of the liberty whilst she was docked in St Thomas.
Thoughts to the crew!

It seems like Carnival has had several issues like this over the past few years. Is it because of an aging fleet? Improper maintenance? Or does it just seem like they have more issues than other lines because their fleet is big?

People are just more aware of Carnival because they're so big/have been around so long.

RCCL had an engine room fire a few weeks ago, IIRC.

These are so scary! Is there anything cruise lines can do to prevent them?

I won't pretend to know why this happens (not an engineer), but it seems the ships have very good fire suppression systems. From what I've read catching up on this current fire, fire suppression system worked and there were no injuries.

Reading the story I hope that the fact that they could get going again in the same day, while a bit later means it was a minor fire. While I am not a fan of CCL, sometimes they catch a lot of flack for issues that were not their fault. Hope @Tonka's Skipper or @truck1 could chime in, they always have a lot of good knowledge on situations like this.

Yeah, people/the media love to hate CCL.

Since Carnival is still determining the cause of the fire, anyone else, no matter how knowledgeable about the inner workings of ships, would still be speculating.

Right now what's known is that the fire was contained, there's no injuries, and that Carnival has contracted with a resort for a large room for the cruisers to wait. The expectation is that the ship will sail at 8pm tonight; I would also expect at that time, the reason for the fire will be known.

Somehow missed the initial report. Im sitting at work right now and missed Johns post on the fire. Im looking at the 9 pages of posts from another board, but from everything that I am seeing everything was orderly, and things don't look too bad. At the time, there was about 1000 passengers onboard, and they were evacuated to shore, and then to a local hotel to get out of the sun. Theres poster that was on the ship that is giving regular updates on the situation. A lot of what I am seeing is precaution on Carnivals part which is good news in that they have learned from past mistakes, and the fact that the ship is expected to depart later tonight is another good sign. The reason for the delayed departure is so that the USCG which has a base on the Island, and the local port authorities can look at the ship and make sure no other hazards are present. Another reason is that since the C)2 system was used, the affected area needs to cool off before it can be vented so that the fire doesn't rekindle. Then once its been vented, some one can go in and look and verify that the fire is out, and then figure out what happened and make any repairs that can be made while the ship is away from her home port. Ill keep looking and see what I can dig up. But 1 thing is for sure. The reason for the fire wont be known for some time, unless it was an obvious and caught on camera event, like a fuel line parting spraying atomized diesel onto the block which would flash.

The latest from the Carnival Liberty is that she will sail no earlier then 8pm (not sure if its local est or mouse time). The passengers are still ashore from what I gather after glancing threw 9 pages of comments, and Carnival has gotten use of the Mariott nearby for their ballroom for everyone to wait out of the sun. They are also being kept in the loop by messages from crew and letters from the ship. However her latest webcam still shows the ship tied safely to the pier, and no guests on deck. 1st hand reports are of smoke from the funnels consistent with her mains being restarted.

Truck you have as much as I do. Its a good deal the vessel was in port and everyone was able to get off. It is will take some time to see what happened.

rankly the reason people are aware of Carnival fires and accidents are because there are so many of them and a highly questionable design of some of there vessels and safety records. In the last few eyars, the Splendor, Triumph and the Costa Milliumum and the Costa Concordia. The issues with all 4 of the Desteny class? The liberty has had some issues as well, but I am not aware of fires. She was built in Fincantieri in 2005.

Prayers that no one was hurt.

Yep. 2nd time in 2 incidents that the ship was at or near a pier. From the poster, the St Thomas FD was standing by the ship at 1 point, but weren't needed. I agree also, with Carnivals past history and the proliferation of access to the internet we seeing more and more incidents almost real time.

As far as the Destiny class, you have me thinking. Have to check on a few things first, but a hunch is that they were almost all preventable.

Wasn't there another Carnival line vessel that had a main engine breakdown or a fire about 2 years ago??? St Thomas or San Juan maybe? and they sent to the yard empty?

The USCG is saying they assisted as well. They have marine investigators onboard and along with Carnival representatives and P and I (vessel insurance) and possible vessel classification society, will make sure everything is out and it is safe to sail. The USCG Captain of the Port will give permission for when the vessel can sail.

Now that I think about it yes. I think she was in the Caymans. one of her back up generators failed not long after the Triumph and they flew the passengers home as a precaution and took the ship straight to Freeport.
