Carlsbad beach or La Jolla?

I'll have a go here. I grew up in San Diego and frequented both. I'd have to say if you're looking for a family beach, go to La Jolla. While Carlsbad isn't bad by any means, it's just a long strip of sand. La Jolla is in a cove, slightly better protected and more restaurants and hotels around. It's also a marine preserve. La Jolla can get expensive, but if you know where to look you can still get great deals. La Jolla is more central (slightly closer to Sea World). You'll also have Scripps Aquarium just a stones throw from you as well, if you've got the time.

La Jolla. A lot of Carlsbad is down a steep cliff with no civilized way down.

LaJolla is my favorite beach, ever - hands down!

Plus, loads of sea lions to amuse the kiddies!

Definitely La Jolla. It is more family friendly and a nicer beach. There is also a cove where your kids can observe the sea lions! It's a very popular activity, so plan to look for parking depending on when you go and what time of the day you get there. La Jolla's main beach does have a pretty good sized parking lot, but that is a distance from the cove. I lived in San Diego for 18 years, and if you ask the locals for directions or help they will be friendly. That was always my experience!:goodvibes
