Carlos Bakery???

OFF topic, but I wanted to know how you went about getting tickets for that, I have heard it is incredibly hard to go to the Statue of Liberty's crown, because of the limited number of tickets. I so want to do this next year!

It just takes advance planning. All tickets are ordered through www.statuecruises.com (it's the only way to get to Ellis Island and Liberty Island - no private boats.) At that website, you can order tickets "with crown access" up to a year before the date you intend to go. So, if you are going next spring or summer you can actually reserve them now. The cost of the tickets is fairly minimal ($12/adult) and there is no extra charge for "crown access." We were pleasantly surprised that it not only allowed us to go to the crown but we skipped to the front of a line of about 500 people who were waiting for regular entry to the statue pedestal and museum.! We felt like VIPs! (Of course, we went on a gorgeous weekend day in August so it was very crowded.)
The climb is strenuous and not for the claustrophobic - it's about 365 stairs on a narrow spiral staircase. But once you get up there you see the harbor from a vantage point that few get to experience. It was so cool! You could see the writing on the tablet in her hand from the top! Enjoy.

We went from Basking Ridge to Hoboken, and it was NOT a pretty drive. We took 78 to 1/9 to 139 to Jersey Ave/Newark/Vezzetti. Via that route, it is not decent until you actually turn onto Washington Street. The remainder of the drive is industrial.

While there some beautiful gentrified/restored homes in Hoboken (I know many people that live there), it's a bit disingenuous to represent that 4million+ brownstones are the norm.

Anyway, the OP just wants to know if the bakery worth visiting. If she wants a tasty cupcake and a photo op, she should go.

and Hoboken has a very active club scene ( at least the last i knew it did )

I have not been to carlos yet....glad to hear the sisters are so nice...

If you go to Liberty State Park (Statue of Liberty), you can take the Light Rail train from there into Hoboken. Parking/traffic in Hoboken is an absolute nightmare (especially on a weekend), so if you can get there without a car, you'd be better off.

DS21 and I just decided today to take a road trip to the Jersey Shore this weekend (we'll visit relatives and hit the boardwalk), and we want to stop at Carlos Bakery on the way! We'll be crossing in to NJ over the GWB....do we just hop on the Turnpike, GSP, or what? I have a GPS unit, but sometimes people know a better way than it directs you to go.

Once we're in the area, is it easy to park near the bakery?? Does anyone know the hours for Saturday? I clicked on the link above but it was an invalid page.

I work up by the GW Bridge and live just South of Hoboken. I always drive home the scenic way. It's not as quick as going on the turnpike, but I find there to be less traffic on the weekend. Plus you get to see NYC to your left most of the drive.

For the scenic route, take the GW Bridge upper level. Get off at the second exit (should be right after Palisade Parkway) and it says Hudson Terrace. At the bottom of the ramp, turn right and you will continue straight for several miles. If you have your GPS it will tell you to go up a road once you pass a hospital, but continue straight to where the Ferry is, and keep to the right once you see the large Ferry parking lot. Go straight until you can't anymore. I turn left here continuing along the river. After the stop sign you will see a Sheraton straight ahead, continue on the road but make the first left you can after the stop sign. It will look like a dead end road but it is fine. Make a left at the stop sign and then when you get back on the main road, carefully get into the left lane and make a left at the light. (If you can't get over, just make a left at the next light). Turn right on Washington Street. and when you get closer to 1st street look for street parking. However, that may be impossible on a Saturday.

If you want to park in a lot, which is what I would recommend, I would make a left at any time and turn right on Hudson and continue down until around 4th or 3rd and there will be some garages on the left. I cannot remember what the charge is.

If you do not want to do the scenic route, I would stick to what the GPS says. Maybe tune into 1010 Wins for traffic updates. If the tunnel traffic sounds fine, may as well stick to the turnpike.

Does that line end up in Hoboken?

From the Hoboken train station it is about two short blocks.

From the Hamilton station you need to change trains in Newark. Get on the Path train headed to the WTC. Change in Journal Square for the Hoboken train (this could be different on weekends so look at the map on the train or ask someone). An alternative to the path is the take a train from Newark to Hoboken but they do not run that frequently.

DD has been itching to go there so I may treat her one day. Hmm, sounds like a good road trip for DH and the darling (I'm bored) DD.

Hoboken is the place to be if you are young and live or work in the NJ/NY metro area. It is a bit pricy, 1 and 2 bedroom condo’s in many of the new waterfront building’s go for over a million. (guess that is a bargain compared to NYC) The governor of NJ and Artie from the Stern show have condo’s there. (come on..it gotta be nice!) A new Starwood Hotel W just opened.

Like someone mentioned the club scene is happening. The place next to me is rented by about five twenty-something guys. Every Saturday night they rent a limo (great idea because there is no place to park and the DWI cops are everywhere) and take it over to Hoboken for a little partying, nice life. I use to party there 30 years ago when I was young. (does anyone have a website for a time machine?) Now it’s just an occasional visit with my family to the many restaurants. My wife won’t even let me order more than one beer. (really need that time machine!)

My son recently played a few little league baseball games in Steven’s Park on the waterfront. The view of NYC is unreal. We had to of course make a stop at Crumbs Bake Shop and Ben and Jerry’s for a few goodies for the long hot games. www.crumbs.com

Have you been to downtown Jersey City lately? (city next to Hoboken) It is really coming along. Here’s a picture of the new Trump Plaza condo project.

We go to Liberty State Park www.libertystatepark.org on the weekends for bike riding. The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are a stones throw away from it. Great picture place for NYC skyline. If you watch next weeks Barclay's PGA Golf Tournament from the Liberty National Golf course in Jersey City you will see the outstanding view. (unfortunately most of the population of Jersey City will need to watch it on TV, the membership fee for the course is $500K.)

Here’s a great story… A friend of mine purchased a burned out Jersey City brownstone in the 80’s from a city tax sale for about $3K. He restored it for about $70K. He sold it years later for a couple of million. (time mac…oh never mind)

My wife has been getting cakes/treats from Carlos’ for my kid’s birthdays for years. (not the $1000 ones) But recently my wife has proclaimed that she can bake a better cake than any bakery. I must admit her cakes are much better than anything Carlo can whip up. (err hmmm…right honey?)

So I was in Hoboken today and decided to get a lobster tail. I could not believe the line. I think I waited 20 minutes outside and another 25 inside. Buddy was in the store most of the time I was in there but I could not even see him.

The lobster tail was good, I got a pound of cookies and the ones I have had so far have been AMAZING!

I was also amazed that I saw 3 meter spots open on my way to the lot. They are only two hour though, which is good if you are just going to the bakery. I was in town for over 3 hours so I ended up in a lot.

We were there today too! We parked in the parking garage that was on... Hmm... Court Street, I think? It was around the block from the bakery (we walked down 2nd street to the garage).

We'll be driving back on Monday.... will this be a better day; less tourists waiting to get inside the bakery?? I want a lobster tail! LOL

I went on a Monday in June shortly after the show had started airing. There were 3 fans there at first and then they left and I was the only one there. I drive by every weekday at around 8:30am and there is never any line.

What time were you there? I drove by at around 12:50p and glanced to see if I could see you there since I thought today was the day you were going (I'm not a stalker, I swear ). I didn't get too much of a good look though. But it was right around then that it stated to pour. Wonder if I just missed seeing you. I went and got my hair done, had lunch and made it to the bakery at around 3pm.

I am not sure if they sell lobster tails on weekdays. I thought I had read somewhere they only had them on weekends, but maybe that has changed. Definitely get some cookies. They had some large fruit tortes for sale that looked so delicious.

If it was anyone else except Buddy it would probably bug me, but I just love him, so I find the way he says fondant endearing!

I love Cake Boss, everyone on the show, but I started watching because I liked Buddy so much from the cake challenge shows on Food Network. He seems like such a truly nice and geniune guy. I hope the show doesn't change him or his family, his sisters and mother are a riot!

We were just there on Saturday...it is walking distance from the train and if you drive in you would drive down Washington Street all the way to the end. I agree with NeverEnough...There is a small area of Hoboken that is not great but not by Carlo's.

It is also walking distance to the park where you can people watch and eat your cannoli's!
