Has anyone been to Carlos Bakery in Hoboken NJ? (they have a show on TLC called Cake Boss) My DD would love to go.Its supposed to be about 15 minutes away from NY city. Anyways, does anyone know anything about it or the area?

I've been there - my DH got me a cake from there for my 40th. You have to drive through some fairly terrible and industrial areas to get there, but once you are on the street, it is a very nice area where there are many shops and restaurants with outdoor seating. Parking is on the street at meters or in indoor garages that charge by the hour.

The bakery is very crowded with tourists just coming in taking photos and then leaving.

They do have all the standard bakery stuff though, so you can certainly buy a cupcake or danish just to say you had one.

There is however, nothing else to do in Hoboken!

I have been there a few times and drive by it every day. If you are staying in NYC, you can take the PATH train to Hoboken. Then it is a short walk from the station.

There are lots of restaurants and shops in the area.

The sisters are usually running the store and they are very friendly and give out photos of everyone.

We used to get pastry from there every Sunday when I still had family in Hoboken.

There are some great restaurants & shops. Frank Sinatra Park is pretty & right on the water over looking the NYC skyline.

Not sure where Janey traveled but there is a very small area of Hoboken which isn't great but a distance form Carlo's.

With brownstones starting at 4 million plus I would love to know how she drove in:confused3

We were just there on Saturday...it is walking distance from the train and if you drive in you would drive down Washington Street all the way to the end. I agree with NeverEnough...There is a small area of Hoboken that is not great but not by Carlo's.

It is also walking distance to the park where you can people watch and eat your cannoli's! ;)

Here's a pic:

ETA: The train is right down at that corner...

We went from Basking Ridge to Hoboken, and it was NOT a pretty drive. We took 78 to 1/9 to 139 to Jersey Ave/Newark/Vezzetti. Via that route, it is not decent until you actually turn onto Washington Street. The remainder of the drive is industrial.

While there some beautiful gentrified/restored homes in Hoboken (I know many people that live there), it's a bit disingenuous to represent that 4million+ brownstones are the norm.

Anyway, the OP just wants to know if the bakery worth visiting. If she wants a tasty cupcake and a photo op, she should go.:thumbsup2

We were just there last weekend!! Buddy came out and took pictures with everyone!! It was great!!
You HAVE to get their lobster tail pasteries!! OMG is all I can say!!!!

I really want to go there on a weekend to get a lobster tail. Maybe if I finish my paper tomorrow I will go on Saturday. I was thinking of getting my hair cut in Hoboken soon anyway. I have yet to see Buddy. I am always peeking down the alley every day when we drive by to see if I can see them putting a cake in one of their vehicles.

There is a shady area if you come off the turnpike at exit 14C and turn left. That's where my voting station is. Hoping to get moved back to my neighborhood after the census. It's horrifying having to cross the streets with the inbound and outbound tunnel traffic.

In Hoboken going down Newark towards Washington, you have the NJ Transit trains on the right and all the housing complexes on the left. I would not call that industrial. But what do I know, I live in a "terrible" area.

I grew up on Carlos pastries! My parents are from Hoboken. My dad knew his dad very well. I grew up in Union City (I guess one of those "terrible" areas someone mentioned above, lol!)...DELICIOUS cake. I can't eat Italian pastries anywhere else.

My sister lives 2 blocks from Carlos Bakery. We've been going there for years. I love thier cappuchinos. I don't eat pastry anymore (gluten free - sad) but i do remember them being very good :)

I think I have the pictures figured out.

We got in line there and I was just telling the kids, "you know, don't expect to see Buddy or anyone, because it's a Sunday afternoon, they're probably not here." With that, my daughter points and the window on the second floor and says, "look, it's Stretch". Then, Buddy appears!! He waved and they were all taking pictures of the line from upstairs!

We were next in line to get in the store, and Buddy comes out and puts his arm around my daughter and starts talking. Everyone is yelling that they want pictures. He said, you will all get pictures. I'll stay here 'till you're done. So, my other kids get in there with him and I take some pictures.

Just a really nice guy. While we were still in the shop, he came back and talked with us a for a bit. We talked with Mama and asked for a bachelorette cake - which made her say "no way, no how!" LOL!

We enjoyed the visit!

There was a line to get in the store??? Wow!

There was a line to get in the store??? Wow!

oh, yeah. Some guy at the door only letting people in when people left. We waited about 15 minutes.

Oh, and while we were in line, Mama came walking up. She said she had just come from church and was asking everyone where they were from.

I went there in June on a Monday and it was just me and a group of girls who were fans of the show. Only two of the sisters were in the store. I told them they all had to be careful about their activities so they don't end up like Jon & Kate and being splashed all over the tabloids. They said since there are so many of them, they keep each other grounded.

I would LOVE to go there, but being in Alabama I don't see it happening. :rotfl2: We watch the show every week and we love it. Buddy seems like such a nice man and he has a lovely family too. I love to watch how they work to create the things that they do. The cakes look AMAZING.

OMG, thanks for posting this! Next year we want to take a trip out east, and I was thinking of putting this on our to-do list, now for certain it is on our list!!!

We were just there on Saturday..

OMG! We were there on Saturday, too! (Unfortunately, arriving just as the crowds were rushing to the river upon news of the helicopter/small plane crash.) We made a day of it. We started our day by going to the Statue of Liberty to climb to the crown of the Statue of Liberty. What an amazing thing to do!!! Then, went into Hoboken for lunch and dessert and a stroll along Washington Street to see the shops and people-watch. Wanted to try Carlo's but the line was absurd! Next time, we'll have to wear our lime green ribbons so we can find each other.:thumbsup2

OFF topic, but I wanted to know how you went about getting tickets for that, I have heard it is incredibly hard to go to the Statue of Liberty's crown, because of the limited number of tickets. I so want to do this next year!

Carlos Bakery is located on:
95 Washington St.
Hoboken, NJ 07030

Hoboken is a beautiful city with gorgeous views of NYC from Frank Sinatra Park, in addition to other areas there. You can spend a day alone just on Washington Street. Take it from someone who once lived there. I frequent Hoboken, considering I only live about 15 minutes away. Occasionally on the weekends, I DJ at bar in Hoboken called 'The Shannon' on 1st St.

Ok, regarding Buddy...we went to the same highschool. Although he was a freshman when I was a senior. So we do know each from highschool, which was back in 93-94. Yikes! lol I recently stopped in the bakery and he was there and noticed me right away...we spoke for a little while and caught up on things. I congratulated him on his success. He's a good guy.
