Caring for bamboo

I bought a little sprig of bamboo in China at Epcot this week, but it is starting to look a little sickly. I gave it water- what else should I do? Is it supposed to stay in the gel stuff it came in, or just in water? Or soil? I don't want to kill the poor thing- help!

I keep mine in a vase filled with decorative stones and water. I've had it for years. The roots have to be in water all the time.

Miyagi-san (that was my bamboo's name. Yes I named it. ) lived in a glass vase with some decorative stones and water until he managed to acquire a NASTY fungus and keeled over one day.
