Caribbean Beach Resort FAQ's Part II

This is not a CBR question, but hoping kind person will point me in the right direction. Is there a way to go directly to threads where I've posted a question, to see the repsonses since then? Seems like I did that several years ago, and I can't figure it out, or find the answer on any of the generic threads--help! [and what's a "sticky" anyway?!]

Once I get up my nerve to do a reply, then come back to the computer another day and can't find/remember where I posted. Grrr--I'm sure posters have answered my questions, but i can't find them! I know I can remember this one, because I always check here first.

We're headed back in late July--last WDW trip was 5 years ago, POR. Two great trips to FW cabins in '94 and '98, but our very first trip in '90 was to CBR, so this one brings us home!

Thanks for guiding a confused Disney nut...and true CBR fan!

After you type your post or question, scroll down before you submit. There's a subscription/notification drop down box for email notifications. Those emails, and your subscription to the thread, will take you to the next posted reply. Make sense??

Do all the rooms have coffee makers? Anyone stay in Jamaica before? If so, your thoughts...the distance to OPR? Thanks a lot!:thumbsup2

Yes all rooms have a coffee pot. Jamaica is a favorite of many people. It is a short walk across the bridge and island to OPR.

This is my 2nd trip to Disney (my first time going with children - 16 months & celebrating a 4 year olds birthday). We booked and already paid for 4 nights at the Carribean Beach with just a standard room. But now I'm wondering if we should have requested a preferred room. When looking at the map and reading some reviews, I'm scarred the bus wait time and walking distances is going to be hard on my kids, especially after a long and hot day at the park. We're checking in next Sunday (June 10). We originally booked our vacation package through AAA. Do you think the bus waits and crowds will be an issue? Is it too late to put in a room location request or upgrade if need be? Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to make this a great birthday experience for my little princess!princess:

I've always asked for standard rooms. The only difference between standard and preferred is the pool or beach view and distance to OPR. Never had a bad view yet.

Every village has its own bus stop, so the "bus waits" will not be any different in a preferred location room than in any other room anywhere else on-property.

If you are concerned about long walks, then it will be worth it to you to pay for and reserve a preferred location room. If you simply request a preferred location room, everyone who actually paid for it will already be in line ahead of you.

Keep in mind that simply requesting Jamaica (or any other village) won't guarantee you Jamaica. You also need to ask yourself how much you'll be using the food court and the main pool. If you'll be eating most of your meals away from CBR and if you'll be happy with your village's quiet pool, then the distance from OPR shouldn't really matter that much.

But I'm also a believer in peace of mind. Depending on season, the total cost of the upgrade to preferred location for 4 nights will be between $60-$104 + tax. For me personally, that kind of money is a small price to pay for the peace of mind that I'll have knowing I won't have a long walk to and from OPR every day of my vacation. But that's just me ....

We just got back last Thurs (5/31).

I booked 2 months before our trip, standard room as close to food court and pool as possible.

We got Martinique, bldg 26. I don't know if that's a standard room or they upgraded us because it was available, but we couldn't have been happier with that location.

We stayed May 26th through June 1st and had a great time. It was me, DH, DS6, DD4 and DS2. We were in Martinique 2105. My parents and aunt and grandmother had two other rooms also.

Here are our observations:

Check-In: We arrived about lunch time on Saturday. The line to check in wasn’t long, but the Magical Express area was crazy. We drove so I’m not sure what that was about. I must say, we did not have a very nice CM check us in. She wasn’t rude or anything, but she never smiled, didn’t say anything like “Welcome” or “How can I help you?”. She just said I need your hotel voucher and went about her business. I asked if we could get two rooms that connected and she said she didn’t have anything to do with that. We would get whatever room we were assigned. One of our rooms was ready so that was nice and I was much too excited after 9 months of planning to let her bother me. My aunt and grandmother said the lady that checked them in was very nice and gave them Grand Gathering buttons.

The grounds: Absolutely beautiful! Very lush and green which was a nice change of pace since everything’s brown here because of the drought. We enjoyed our walk to Old Port Royale by the lake, but like others have said, it is spread out and a little confusing. I don’t think we walked the same way twice through the buildings, but we always made it back. I should have timed it for you, but I know it was less than 10 minutes walking with little ones. We would often see bunnies, ducks and lizards which the kids just loved. Watch the birds if you eat outside!

The room: We had plenty of room and enough storage for everyone. We even brought a pop-up Play Hut tent for my DS2 to sleep in as he is too big for a pack-n-play. It fit nicely between the bed and the door and was out of the way. Like others have said, it’s nice to store your suitcases under the beds. The vanity area was a plus with two sinks and the curtain to separate it. We would get up before the kids to take showers and it was nice not to have to disturb them with the light. The fridge held a lot. The AC wasn’t too loud, but our beds squeaked pretty bad which was a little annoying since I’m a light sleeper. Mousekeeping was great. The room was always done when we came back in the afternoon for naps. And we had new towel animals everyday. They would set up the towel animals and my kids stuffed animals up in different ways. One day they were all looking out the window waiting for us. The kids loved it!

The buses: I just read a review from the same time frame that said the buses were awful for the non-emh parks, but we did not find this the case. We never waited more than 15-20 minutes for a bus. There was one major exception, one non-emh night at Epcot the line after Illuminations was backed-up all the way to the main walk way from the buses. We paid $15 for a car back to the resort that night. You expect the line to be long, but that was ridiculous and none of the other resort lines were that long. Not sure what happened or what they did to remedy the situation. Other than that, we never waited that long and only had to stand if we left right after park closing. It was about a 5 minute walk to our bus stop.

The food: We ate at the food court more than I thought we would. We ate the rotisserie chicken a couple of times. My Dh and I shared that. It was very good and a nice value for counter service (we were on the DDP). My parents said the salmon and pork were good too. We also had the burgers which were good and my kids had the pizza, spaghetti and meatball and the chicken nugget bucket. All were fine. The chicken nuggets were very processed, but my kids didn’t seem to care since it came in a sand pail with a shovel. The food court had lots to choose from and if you’re on the dining plan, you can choose your dessert from the grab and go section which has big cookies, brownies and cakes. You do not have to choose the desserts from the same section you ordered your food. Seating was never an issue with the times we ate and I did like that the tables were big so you had enough room for all of your food. We also ate outside once. Like I said watch the birds. We did not eat at Shutters, but there were always people waiting.

The pool: We used both our quiet pool and the main pool. My kids aren’t good swimmers so I’m not sure about the water slide, but it looked cool. They had fun in the big pool and the kiddie pool had fountains spraying into it which they liked. What I did not like was those stupid love bugs. I think they are attracted to water because there were a lot of them near the pool. Not swarms like I’ve read about, but still annoying. You get used to them eventually though.

So anyway, we all loved the resort and would stay there again. Besides the first CM, all the staff were very friendly and helpful. The gift shop was also cute with lots of POC stuff. We also got my daughter's hair wrapped (just two strands) outside by the pool. A little pricey but she loved it and still has them in.

I also wanted to say thanks to everyone on the thread. You were all so helpful. Let me know if you have any questions!

:thumbsup2 AUDramaQueen, thank you for the trip report!! We leave in 10 days to go back to our favorite!! Glad you had a great time!

We are thinking of changing our resort and CBR is one we might choose. We have a family of 5 as well me, DH, DS8, DD5, and DD2. Did you feel cramped at all? DD2 would take a nap - how did you handle naptime if your DS2 napped? Like the idea about the tent..I'll have to remember that. Thanks for any info.

Thanks for the report AUDramaQueen. We are coming 6/30 for the holiday week. It's only our 2nd time to WDW and our 1st time staying at CBR. I know we'll love it, though I expect to be overwhelmed after staying at POFQ last year.

So glad you had a fun time.

Thank you for your very detailed report! We just stayed at CBR in March for our second trip and I couldn't agree more with everything you said. We had a great time at CBR.

I will agree with you on the busses, especially Epcot. The other parks had normal waiting periods, but everytime I've left Epcot, there seems to be extra long lines, while the other pickups for other resorts are empty. Not sure what to make of that!

Thanks everyone for their advice. I've got one more question - do you think it would be a good idea to go ahead and call the resort to put in a building preference or should I just wait and do it at check-in? princess:

The very best way to handle this is to call Disney and have your request actually put onto your reservation. This is by no means a guarantee that you'll get it, but your request information will be bundled together with your reservation information, rather than on a loose piece of paper that may or may not make its way to the room assigner and may or may not be discarded without being looked at.

If you made your reservation through a travel agent, then all requests must be made by the travel agent and not by you.

If this is the case, ask your TA to get you an updated copy of your reservation. We upgraded from Pop Century to CBR and changed the request that very day. Only the CM didn't put it into the computer correctly and if my TA hadn't asked her to fax over the updated reservation we wouldn't have caught the error. It would have said (Request: Jungle Book Building...lol)!
