After schlogging through the "weight" debate over on the DB I have a question. Please don't turn this into a huge mud sling:(

Our son and our nephew are both 21 years old. Both are colege football players who obviously exercise very regularly. 1 is 6'4" 265, and the other 5'11" and 180. Body fat on 1 is 18% and 16 % on the other. Yet acording to the "charts" one is "normal" and the other is"obese".
So my question is .............

How can a chart tell the difference between them and their body types?

I'm no medical person, but IMO, that's one example of how the charts just don't work for everyone. I think there are some charts that have different weights for different builds, but there probably isn't one for someone with so much muscle mass. He will have to be careful when he stops playing football. He'll either need to maintain his muscle mass by frequently exercising, or he'll have to significantly reduce the amount he eats and become much smaller. Otherwise, the muscle will turn to fat, and that's obviously not healthy.

it's a chart. it speaks in generalizations. it doesn't know your son or nephew, and it hasn't examined either of them.

Charts mean nothing. It goes on an individual basis.

Otherwise, the muscle will turn to fat

sawrey ter disagree Kermit..but that's not biological possible....his or anyones muscles can atrophy due to none use...but if he doesnot keep up the same, or greater, level of physical activity...and if he continues to consume the same amount of calories....fat deposits will build up.....the charts DO NOT represent one who has a large degree of muscle on their frame...a better test as to 'obese' or not...is with the body fat %'s....:)

So the answer is.....................

There really isn't one and that was my point. These kids are in great shape. Both of them. But some "scientist" has decided that 265 is "obese" and the stereotyping continues. I hate weight

charts  They do nothing but cause people to try and obtain a number . Then the scientists say the country is too overweight. Although I agree that there are many of us, myself included, who could stand to lose some weight:rolleyes: the bottom line is we need to put realistic health standards as a goal and not some number on a scale.
