Well, our carbon monoxide detectors went off last night:eek:and I had to call the gas company. Of course we left the house and waited until the gas comany man came to do readings. As it turned out, we had a short in the detectors (ceiling mounted) and everything was fine. But we do have wall plug in detectors as well, one on each floor. In conversation, the gas company man told us not to bother with the wall plug-ins as a back up stating that they do no good...:confused:I guess this is his opinion, but I was wondering what others know about them. Why not? I'm always cautious and that is why we have a backup...

In Mass you are required to have CM detectors on every floor. Every year people die from CM during the winter months when the snow gets high and blocks outakes etc. The state says the plug in ones are ok, they recommend brands to avoid, so perhaps they are not all the same.

We had one that was CM & natural gas, and it detected a gas leak in my basement. We were VERY lucky. It was so bad they evacuated all of my neighbors and immediatelydug up the street & driveway. Scared me enough to keep the batteries fresh!

GEEZ, I have both types.....I JUST changed the batteries in 2 of them, its why I LIKED the wall outlet one, ????
WHY did he say that? What was his issue with it?????

I am sure he was expressing a personal opinion. All detectors must meet minimum standards, plugin or battery or both.
