How often should you replace carbon monoxide and smoke detectors? Not the batteries, but the whole thing? For some reason, I just started thinking of this and wondering how old mine were. Anybody know? :confused3

From what I have read, you should replace smoke detectors every ten years. I don't know about CO detectors.

I just had the joy of having the fire department at my house for a carbon monoxide call. Yes, that was sarcasm. They were lovely people, and I still feel like a dork for walking into the garage to "smell" the carbon monoxide. And yes, I -knew- at the time I wouldn't be able to smell it. What a dork!

What I read was the fire detectors need to be vacuumed. I don't know about you, but I've never vacuumed a single fire detector. I'm sure that affects their life span!

Figure on replacing your fire detectors every 8-10 years. Try replacing them with photoelectric and ionic fire detectors, and CO detectors.

Carbon monoxide, replace every 5 years. Smoke, replace every 10 years.
