Our carbon monoxide detector went off around midnight Saturday night/Sunday Morning. It turns out it was right on the money! The Gas Co. came out & said we had high readiings of carbon monoxide coming from our boiler & we had to shut it off until it could be serviced. I think it was about 15-20 degrees then, & it doesn't feel like it has gotten any warmer.

I got lucky again that the plumber is here now replacing both the boiler & hot water heater. It is soooo COLD!!Brrrrr!

But we are very thankful for the carbon monoxide detector. I just heard of a family who died in their sleep within the last month from carbon monoxide. :( It unfortunately happens too often in the winter months.

I heard a lot of sarcasm for having detectors in each wing of my house, but I'm glad I did. Might be a good gift for someone you care about on your Holiday list that doesn't have one. ;)

Just thought I'd post this for anyone who might be interested.

Wow, I'm glad you got out safely. We gave these to relatives a few years ago. It doesn't make sense to not have them! Thanks for sharing your experience so that it may help someone else to be safe.:D

I'm very glad the detector was on the job. Hope you can warm up soon.

We have ours installed. Thanks so much!

We have two in our house. I am very glad you had them and that you are all fine.

We have ours. Suuuuuuch a good job that you had yours! Yikes, scary... but good job you had it.

Take care!

We had one hardwired in when we built our house, but had it removed within a few months because so many things would set it off.....strong cooking odors, hairspray, bleach in the wash.....this was about 8 years ago. Maybe they've improved since then. Any brand recomendations?

Thank God you had them and that your entire family is safe today. What a wonderful gift.

Wow! I'm glad it worked. We only have one, and I've been meaning to get at least one other one. Your post has inspired me to get onto that now.

We have one in the basement and another outside of the bedrooms............wouldn't think of having a house without them:D ..........

We have one, too. You're right, it would make a great gift to a loved one!:D

Glad they did their job, El, so very deadly it can be. We have one in each bedroom, hallway, LR, FR, and utility room, seven all together. Let them laugh, you are the smart one!!!!

Just some extra info I heard on the radio this weekend. Take a can of the pressurized air and blow the detector out. Dust can prevent them from working properly. They also said install them on the wall by the heat registers. (about half way up that wall).Something I had never heard before.
So glad your family is alright and your monitor worked Nuts4D!:D

I'm glad it worked! We found out that our boiler was spewing carbon monoxide a couple years ago during a heating check-up. Luckily, we scheduled our check-up for September so we were at the top of the list to get our boiler replaced in November ... just when it began to get cold. To make matters worse, we has asbestos on our pipes (c 1917) that had to be removed before they would replace the boiler. What an expensive fall!

We have the same setup as EROS. I change them every 5 years.

Thanks Everyone for the good wishes! :)

We are very grateful that everyone is OK! It was cold for awhile, but the plumber installed a new boiler & hot water heater [it was time for both anyway] & the house finally got warm by 11am today...it's nice & toasty in here now. :)

faith: Thanks for the tip! Good idea...I'm going to try that. :)

BedKnobbery2: We just went to the Home Depot [or something like that] & picked up 2 battery operated ones & installed them.

BTW, they say if you have "hardwired" [electrical] Smoke Detectors and/or Carbon Monoxide Detectors to also have battery operated ones because in the event of an electrical power outage, the detectors would not be working.

We also have smoke detectors in every room - they're the kind that pick up smoldering, heat, etc. - because I saw a fire a few years back that really spooked me.

We have a ranch style house & I was pretty confident that we'd be able to "get out" until I recently read that a poor firefighter died in a fire in his own house, which happened to be a ranch. I wasn't so confident then. :(

Sorry to be so gloomy. Please be careful.

HAVE A HAPPY & SAFE HOLIDAY! :)
