Car- What would you do?

84k is nothing for a Honda. Just get the new tires. You'll have some routine maintenance that will cost a bit up the road, but nothing compared to purchasing a new car.

Get the new tires. My husband has a 92 accord and that thing is a work horse. Minor repairs here and there over the year but nothing that even came close to the cost of a new car.

One of the best things about my Kia is that the dealer offered me free tires for life as long as I keep up with the routine maintenance. It's a win-win for me since it will encourage me to actually keep up with the maintenance.

Some decades back 100,000 miles was a lot. Then 100,000 miles became common, and now it seems 200,000 is fairly common. I know several people with vehicles in the 300,000-400,000 mile range now. So unless some very expensive repair is on the horizon, mileage is not always the limiting factor anymore in deciding to keep a car.

Our Honda has 260,000. Your question made me laugh. I'm glad you got good answers. :)

dh's 2003 RAV4 has 150K+ on it but may need a new trannie soon. Even at $5k for a trans...it's still waaaay cheaper than a new car.

Though I'd agree there's something psychological about seeing the 100,000, I don't know that there's much about going from 99k->100k miles that happens magically and all at once at that point. Sure, a car with 100k miles is worth very little compared to when it was new, but that's a gradual decrease... with 90k or even only 80k isn't that much higher in value.

A lot of dealers see it that way though if you're looking to trade a car in and a lot of private buyers do too. At least around here.

But you are paying much more for maintenance at a dealer than you are saving in tires....

I've never bought a Japanese car with less than 84,000 miles. 84,000 miles on a Toyota or Honda is far better than a Ford or GM new off the lot. I made the mistake of buying a new Ford instead of a used Honda for my wife. I have a pile of cash in repairing this one new Ford than I've ever had repairing all of my Japanese cars combined.

Tires, definitely!! I have an '08 Civic and I plan on driving that sucker into the ground! It just hit 50k miles last weekend and I plan on having it at least another 100k!

Definitely get the tires and consider yourself fortunate to have a car that works fine! Hondas are great and you should get a lot more use out of that Accord before you need to even think about trading it in for a new one.

A Honda with 84,000 miles still has life in it . . . yet, if you go to trade it, you're going to get nothing for that car. The last couple cars we've had have lasted two years longer than we expected.

So . . . buy the tires, then start putting the car payment you would've been making into a savings account. That way, when your car really does die for good, you'll hopefully be able to pay cash for it.

When did needing tires and a caution light (that you should get checked out it is attached to the air bags) justify a new car? :confused3

My Focus has 175k miles on it, and she still runs great. Cars today, as long as you take care of them, should run great for a long time. You should be sick of it before it's sick of you.

84K miles is nothing on an Accord. Buy those tires and drive it at least another 100K.

I bought my neighbor's Accord when it had 98K on it. We've driven it for a year with just a minor repair and expect it to last many more years.

We put new tires on my husband's commuting car which is a Subaru at 150k miles. It just went in for routine service and the tech said you have a few more years with it, everything looks good.

I'd put on new tires! FWIW, we also considered buying a new car when it needed tires at 150K but with the mechanics advice, we'll keep running it and save longer.

Seriously?! I'd buy the tires and move on. Tires are INFINITELY cheaper than a new/different car and there's nothing wrong with your car (although, I'd probably get that light checked out). I would never use the impending purchase of tires as a basis for getting a new car, it's a maintenance item...like oil changes, just a bit more expensive.

ummm...yea..... 300.00 vs 23,000.00....no contest! not even a question.....84k is practically nothing on that car

I'm about to put tires on my 1997 Chevy Cavalier, 176000 miles. It runs like a top and I expect many more miles out of it! I'm even going to get some nice tires this time!

This may be one of the rare events on the DIS where there is a common consensus!

I have to go with the crowd on this one. Get the tires! We put a full set on my car for just over $200. I have 15" wheels, the smaller the wheels, the cheaper the tires may be.

The last vehicle we traded off had over 250,000 miles on it. We are about to post our van for sale - 125,000 miles - nothing wrong with it, we have just accumulated too many vehicles! Our family of three doesn't need two cars, a truck, and a minivan!

LOL...I WISH our Accord ('95 wagon) only had 84,000 miles on it! Ours has over 300,000 miles on it now and is still going strong.

I love to see this. My 98 Civic is closing in on 200k, and it gets the best mileage of our three vehicles. Gonna drive it till the wheels fall off. :thumbsup2

Seriously? New tires. I'm sure everyone else has said the same thing. Hang on to that Accord!

Also, if you REALLY want to give up $400 a month for the next 5 years... put that money into savings for the next car. That way you can buy it outright when the Accord finally does need to be replaced.

I was thinking the SAME thing! :rotfl:
