84k is nothing for a Honda. Just get the new tires. You'll have some routine maintenance that will cost a bit up the road, but nothing compared to purchasing a new car.
Though I'd agree there's something psychological about seeing the 100,000, I don't know that there's much about going from 99k->100k miles that happens magically and all at once at that point. Sure, a car with 100k miles is worth very little compared to when it was new, but that's a gradual decrease... with 90k or even only 80k isn't that much higher in value.
But you are paying much more for maintenance at a dealer than you are saving in tires....One of the best things about my Kia is that the dealer offered me free tires for life as long as I keep up with the routine maintenance. It's a win-win for me since it will encourage me to actually keep up with the maintenance.
Seriously?! I'd buy the tires and move on. Tires are INFINITELY cheaper than a new/different car and there's nothing wrong with your car (although, I'd probably get that light checked out). I would never use the impending purchase of tires as a basis for getting a new car, it's a maintenance item...like oil changes, just a bit more expensive.
LOL...I WISH our Accord ('95 wagon) only had 84,000 miles on it! Ours has over 300,000 miles on it now and is still going strong.
This may be one of the rare events on the DIS where there is a common consensus!
I have to go with the crowd on this one. Get the tires! We put a full set on my car for just over $200. I have 15" wheels, the smaller the wheels, the cheaper the tires may be.
The last vehicle we traded off had over 250,000 miles on it. We are about to post our van for sale - 125,000 miles - nothing wrong with it, we have just accumulated too many vehicles! Our family of three doesn't need two cars, a truck, and a minivan!
