We are thinking about buying a soft sided car top carrier for our vacation to North Carolina . Currently I drive a Taurus station wagon that has a roof rack so I can tie it down. We don't want the hard sided one because of the cost and we would have to store it.

Anyone have any experience with these? I would appreciate your comments.

I have a Thule soft side for my Envoy- bought it when we went to WDW last april..........LOVE it- and its not "water resistant" its literally water proof...we hit some serious storms on the way home, and everything stayed dry
bought it at sears I think it was 189.99

We have a soft sided car top carrier. Bought it 3 years ago. It fit on top of our kia sportage without any problems. It is NOT waterproof. It is water RESISTANT, but not waterproof. We did not realize that going into our trip. Did realize it after it rained the first time. After that, we put our suitcases in plastic.....
I would have bought the hard side if I had known these were not waterproof...
Ours was much cheaper than Brandy's model. Only about 50 bucks I think.
Good luck. Maybe the waterproof one that Brandy has would be ok.

"you get what you pay for" as the old saying goes. I didnt do a hard side one, because I wanted to be able to load this- then throw it up there, and strap it down, not load it while it was on the truck.

this is ours

Rugged, updated styling consistent with Thule cargo bag family
Waterproof materials and taped seam construction keep contents dry.
Internal foam insertconstruction helps maintain bag shape for easier packing.
Equipped with interior cargo management pockets and netting
Heavy duty tarpaulin construction
15 Cubic Feet

Its 179.00 on thier site, but I think we paid 189 at Sears

we have a soft side one for our blazer or suburban, bought it to haul camping gear when we take more than one family to mountains, we store the tents, sleeping bags etc in it and while not water proof,, it stays 95% dry during our afternoon thundershowers here, ours is a bit large to load the bag then put on the truck, but its easy to load standing on tailgate of blazer:) definately something we like using... note though that these things do affect stability ( raise the center of gravity) and gas milage,, milqage on blazer dropped by about 4 mpg when loaded carrier was on top...

Brandy,
That one looks wonderful! I need to sell my old one now. Have nothing to use it on. Got rid of the SUV and now have a Honda Accord with sun roof... no place to use one (besides, it has a huge trunk!).

Thanks for all the input. We saw the Thule one at Sears and at Pep Boys. Much cheaper at Pep Boys but I wonder if they are the same.

We have one that we bought....oh 7 years ago so I am not sure of the brand. It's water resistant but the first time we used it all of our stuff got wet. What we did in the following year and plan to do on our trip to Yellowstone is put a tarp over it, and then secure it down with bungy cords (DH loves bungy cords). We will only have our camping stuff in there so we shouldn't need to get into until we get there.
