Car Sick ?

Hi Ok Canadians, what can you buy at your local pharmacy for motion sickness. It seems that traveling long distances now I get car sick. I try Gravel, but who wants to sleep your way to Florida. I NEED something strong so I can enjoy the trip down with Dh and 2 DDS. My DH bought me the wrist bands on the Disney Cruise a year ago, so they are packed. The whole family will be dancing and jumping for joy if I don't get sick.(It will take us two days to get down south too) HELP

I think they sell Bonine over the counter but I am not sure. This worked for me on a cruise. If you are open to natural supplements you might find something good there also. My husband bought some tablets called "Trip Ease" that had no drowsy side effects for our a cruise we took recently.

Yes, I haven't needed to use it for car sickness, but I've bought it to give to my DH since he HATES spinning and/or roller coaster rides but will go on each one once for us. Took it myself the first time I went on Mission Space and no worries.

Count me in on the motion sickness thing! I have two remedies that really work-You can buy Bonamine (Meclizine) at Shoppers (beside the Gravol) and they also have a "natural" Gravol with ginger (does not make you sleepy).

One of the best pieces of advice I got on this board a couple of years ago. I have a daughter who suffers terribly from motion sickness. We found that gravol made her really drousy. Someone told us to try dramamine only available in the states. So everytime we went we stocked up on it. Someone on these boards told me to take the Dramamine to the pharmacy counter at Target and tell them I wanted the generic kind. The pharmacist brought a bottle containing 100 pills (meclizine) and placed it on counter and I thought Oh geez what's this going to cost. $4 yep four bucks. We decided to get the lower dosage of pills so she could just take a little bit if needed or double up for a long trip.

She is no longer so sleepy on a trip that she can't cope. I hope this helps you. It certainly made a huge difference to us!

I also buy Bonine - I bought it OTC at Walmart, and it was very reasonably priced. I found it worked great for when I was travelling - and I get really bad motion sickness.

My sister was always sick whenever we got into the car. Not just on long trips but even short ones to the corner store.

The Dr. recommended my parents buy static strips for the car. The strips attach to the car behind the back tire (you can use 1 or 2) and it hangs down so it is touching the road. As you drive along your car builds up a static electrical charge which can sometimes cause the occupants to feel queasy. You know how sometimes you get into the car/van and take a drive to the grocery store, when you get out and touch the metal on the outside of the door you sometimes can get a static shock. This always happens to me but my DH says I'm 'Hot Stuff' anyway, ha ha!

Not all occupants are bothered by this electrical charge. We were a family of 4 children and 2 adults and my sister was the only one that was bothered by this during road trips. This strap discharges the electrical charge back into the road. My parents bought them and attached to every vehicle they ever owned. From then on my sister was never sick for car trips, long or short.
And we certainly did our share of travelling. We owned a travel trailer and had many trips across Canada and down to Florida when we where younger.

My Sis is now married with 2 kids of her own and both her vehicles have static strips on them.

Just a thought and it would save you from 'doping' yourself senseless!

Thanks everyone. My Dh and I went to Walmart today.The pharmasist said they don't have Bonine-it will make you drowsy too. He didn't really tell me what to use either. Then my Dh went to auto department and was told she hasn't seen any around . I guess we will keep our eyes and ears open, just might have to buy something on way down.

I have gotten car sick my entire life. I don't get car sick if I sit in the front seat, don't travel to Florida by the Virginia's, and keep my stomach full. (this also works for pregnancy and cruises). I munch on celery, carrots, crackers, gum, ice, etc all the way to Florida. My kids also get sick but they get Gravol because the "drowsy" side effect is really a beneficial one in my eyes.

I know the pharmacist said that Bonine will also make you drowsy, but it didn't for me. I fall asleep within 10 minutes of taking gravol, but with Bonine, I was alert and ready for the day. I would ask another pharmacist or your doctor what they would recommend. If you have a Shoppers around your home, try there. I have always had excellent service from their pharmacists with recommendations.

I totally agree with Shoppers-they sell a product called Bonamine-it's in the aisle right beside the gravols (it's meclizine-just a different name).
If you are looking for the strips to attach to your vehicle, you can get them at Cdn Tire stores (tires and accessories section). BTW-these things freeze in the winter and can make a terrible noise when you are backing up-for months we thought our brakes were going and then a wise mechanic discovered it was only the frozen strip dragging on the pavement. LOL talk about feeling like a dummy when I found out!

We also have daughters who get motion sickness -- 1 much more than the other, but the 2nd has a health condition that means we can't take ANY chances with vomiting. We'd rather not dope them up either, but on our 2 hour boat cruise at Lunenburg, NS last Fall we were unsure how our 2 landlubbers would react on the small boat. So we asked Shopper's pharmacist about this wonderful Bonine I read about on these boards. The pharmacist there told us that it might also make them drowsy as different people react differently to it. Well, we used it for them and I almost forgot we had. Both were wonderfully alert (not hyper though) and happy. I'm so glad we did. Gravol sends them to sleep IMMEDIATELY. Hope we get the same magic from it for our Cruise -- though I think Mission Space might be pushing it for some of us!

We also use the sea bands for them on long car trips & the girls get ginger cookies for car snacks. It does seem to help and certainly doesn't harm.

Thanks everyone, I guess that I should try Shoppers for the Bonine, is it pills or liquid? If I ask REALLY NICELY, my mother is known for her delicious ginger cookies. I got to take some on our Disney Cruise last year too.Though I wander, Pharma Pluss is in our little town, what would they carry in pills.

Just bought some chewable natural ginger lozengers-has anyone used these?

Daughter got sick in Disney last week. All of a sudden half way through the crepe she was eating she felt sick. Our friends gave her the chewable ginger gravol.

She hated the taste of it(doesn't like ginger) but she said it really worked.

No more vomitting after taking one chewable.

Thanks for the information! It says you can take some every 4 hours or so. Did you find it necessary for your daughter?
I'd like to try to get away from taking "medication" on our cruise so I thought I would take a supply of these Ginger Gravols.

Hi: Bonamine is a staple in my medicine case.

We have to be real careful with motion as there are three of us who get migraine headaches and vomit. We used bonamine for the car drive and each day that we went into the parks my daughter and I took the bonamine and we were fine going on the rides. We did not get tired. My son did not take the bonamine and got sick on the boat that goes from port orleans french quarter to downtown disney.

We also got ours at shoppers.

Hi again. I guess its off to Shoppers this weekend. I tried Pharma Pluss last weekend and couldn't find any. I will probably be at a different Walmart and try thier too.

This might sound like a dumb question but here goes. I do
use Bonamine but because I'm travelling I don't consume alcohol.
This time it's a little different-we'll be cruising. It says you shouldn't mix the two - any advice/experiences?
