We will be renting a car and have two toddlers we hope to get car seats for them both. I have heard horror stories of people reserving them and then they ran out. We will be renting from dollar any suggestions? Should we bring our own?

We've rented the car seat a couple of times, and never had a problem with them not having one for us. We did, however, have to wait a while once while they located one for us; I believe this was with Dollar.

Also, while we generally found the rented car seat to be adequate, we did not always find them to be particularly clean. We now bring our own. We got a car seat bag at Babies R Us that makes the car seat easier to carry, and has a strap to carry it on your shoulder.

Bring your own. They will be less grimy than the rental car company's seats. Plus, your kids are used to them. I have a luggage cart that I used primarily for my DD's booster seat.

I agree, bring your own! I worked for a major rental car company for years. I can tell you the seats are gross! They are also thrown around alot which could affect the safety of them.

Also, if you are flying, you can use them on the plane. It's safer for the child to be in one. (We always purchase a seat for our kids. Besides safety reasons, it's easier to keep them contained and it's familiar to them) If you don't want to purchase a seat and if the plane is not full, the flight attendants will probably let you use them. If not you can gate check them like the strollers.

From what I have heard, airlines do not charge to check car seats. If each child will have his/her own seat, then they can just sit on them on teh way down. Just give your airline a quick call to double check.

They may not charge to gate check a carseat, but if you check it with your regular luggage it will be counted against your bag total.
