Car Seats?

Hi I was wondering if there was such a thing as a car seat swap out there? I know some people are very sensitive when it comes to this type of thing..My son is in a convertible carseat and I really don't want to have to worry about bringing it on the plane and worry about it being damaged while out of my sight..I also realize that if i borrow or rent one it could have been in an accident, damaged, etc..I'm not trying to put my son in danger just was wondering if such a thing exists down there..thanks

Just asking but.....How would you know if a swap car seat was not in a accident?

I would just check the carseat like I would any piece of luggage.

Have not heard of car seat swaps. But there are a couple of rental agencies in Orlando that you could try. www.abbf.com is the one I can think of right now. This way you do not have to worry about your own being damaged.

How old is your son? Assuming you've bought him a seat I'd use the car seat on the plane, then in the rental car. If your convertible is one of the heavier ones you might want to consider a Cosco Scenera ($35 on sale) as a travel seat if your child weighs less than 40lbs. You can wheel it through the airport in a stroller or attach it to a luggage cart and then gate check the cart or the stroller.

Car seats cannot be used on an airplane. Skymall sells one that is a stroller, airline seat, and car seat that runs about $200. Aside from that one I haven't seen any other seat that can be used on a plane.

That's not correct. Nearly all infant carriers and convertible seats on the market in the US are FAA approved for use in an aircraft. Forward facing combination seats with a harness that can be later used as a booster are almost all FAA approved as well, but only for use with the harness.

(ETA: I'm referring to US carriers only, foreign carriers have some different rules.)

The 2nd picture on the page in the link above shows the sticker that lets you know the seat is approved for aircraft use.

We bought a Cosco Scenera for travel use on planes, and now it's an extra car seat for in DH's car. It came with a travel bag with handle that made it easy to carry through the airport--it finally ripped after our 4th trip flying.

THIS IS DANGEROUSLY INCORRECT INFORMATION. The FAA most certainly allows you to use most car seats on an airplane. So long as the sticker on the side says exactly "This restraint is approved for use in motor vehicles and aircraft". Low back boosters which require a shoulder/lap belt are one of the few types of car seats which are not allowed on airplanes. Please refer to the FAA guidelines for safely traveling with children:

my son does not have his own seat on the plane, he's going to be on my lap and my sister is picking us up from the airport...i've decided we're just going to bring the one we have at home and put it in a car seat travel bag and hope that it dont get damaged..i have seen those 5 in 1 things that are a stroller, carseat type thing that can be wheeled around the airport but i can not afford one of them otherwise that would be ideal..but thanks for the help!

If you're not using the seat ON the plane, gate check it! My guy is 5, doesn't use his seat on the plane, but I bring it through security and gate check it. It's waiting for us when we get off the plane (as long as I dawdle getting out of the plane), and I don't have to watch it slam down the chute nor think about it going through alllll of the airport being banged around. All I have to wonder is how they got it down then up the stairs.

Please educate yourself before you give such dangerous MISINFORMATION. Carseats are allowed on airplanes and the safest way for an infant or small child to travel. Lap babies are dangeorus for the child themelves and for other around should they become a projectile.
