I am flying on AirTran and I have a 2 year old son. Do I need to bring a car seat on the plane for him?

No you do not have to have one.

However, my guy wouldn't have done well in only the lap belt at only two, so we used the carseat until he was 3.5 (when I was boarding an almost full plane along with my son and was exhausted, and the gate agent asked one more time if I wanted to gatecheck it and I said yes). Now he does wonderfully, but at 2 he would have been sliding out and unclicking it all flight long...so although it isn't required, I'd highly recommend it.

You can bring it if you will need it for a car while you are on vacation. I did not bring car seats when my kids were 2 as we would normally just take a shuttle to where ever we were going. My kids have both flown many times and like the novelty of the flight.

It's not required, but strongly recommended for children under 40lbs by the FAA, see here:

Like a pp, my ds was also a wiggle worm, the lap belts are pretty big on a toddler, and they are also very easy to undo. For us, it was easier to keep him in his car seat on long flights than it would have been to keep him seated w/the just the lap belt on the plane. He also napped quite well in his car seat (bonus! lol). Our flights to WDW are 5-6hrs long.

just remember an airplane is a moving vehichle. you would never put your child in a car without a car seat why would you on an airplane.:wizard:
