Car Repair Problem - Opinion/Advice

They need to step up and give you a car you can use. It should have enough seating for your passengers and enough room for you. They caused the damage and are putting you out if they can't get the part in time. It isn't like you just have your car in for normal service.

Check with your insurance company. If you have a rental car provision on your policy, it should pay for one if your main car is wrecked or in the shop being repaired. They may have a limit of the daily cost, but it might be enough to cover a vehicle big enough for you.

I have to slow down when I read. I thought it said CAT Repair Problem.

Who is making the decision within the dealership to give you the smaller car? I would take this up with the service manager, and make sure he/she knows the extra work is due to their mistake.

I do not think you are being unreasonable.

Dealerships make a lot of money on repairs, warranty and otherwise. Their technician made a mistake (or had an accident,) and they are leaving you in the lurch. They will want to keep you as a customer, and this is no way to build loyalty. If their loaner cars can not meet your needs then I would ask them to pay for a rental.

Depending on the dealership, it may be the tech who is paying for your loaner.

The OP can ask for a larger auto, but the dealer is already providing alternative transportation. As for causing a scene, that could get you arrested and your loaner revoked.

OP: How many people are you driving on this long trip?

Quick update - My husband talked with the dealer late today. He said that they think the part will be in tomorrow and they will be able to fix it in time. We will see. I can't help but worry.

Hopefully this will be the case.

There is a legal obligation, then there is customer service goodwill. If you get no satisfaction if you end needing a car. Find the highest up in the dealership - just deal with them.

If that fails, just calmly let them know that being as your car is a 2004 you will be in the market for a new vehicle and will be sure to remember how graciously(sarcasm) they treated their customers. Then ask where their nearest competitor is:thumbsup2 In this economy 1 sales can be a the difference of a black or red month.

Quick update: I guess it pays to be nice sometimes. My husband just talked to the service guy and they are going to replace the loaner with a Chevy Tahoe. He thanked us for being patient and still thinks that they will get the car fixed before Christmas. I'm glad that I vented here to you guys instead of at the dealership. I'm somewhat amazed that the dealership has been so upfront about admitting their fault in the whole process.

My next question after looking at our weather forecast is does the Tahoe handle well in snow?

Enough room for passengers, sure. Enough room for 'stuff', okay. Enough room for people plus luggage plus gifts plus prepared food? Might, understandably, be seen as overly demanding :)

It all depends on the tires. If it has good Mud and Snow tires it will be good. Dedicated snow tires are the best but I'm sure it won't have those.

I'm no snow expert, but your Volvo weights 4450 pounds, the Tahoe weights 5900 pounds......I think 1500 extra pounds might by you better traction in snow and rain.
