Car renting at WDW

Is it really practical to rent a car at WDW?

Usually we drive down from NJ.... of course we drive straight through. But even at that, there are 2 days we could be spending at WDW instead of on the road.

On the other hand, we like taking a day in the middle of the week and going to the outlets, driving to DTD and sometime hotel hopping.

How practical is it to rent a car for a day or two? Is it even possible to get "decent" rates for 1 or 2 days? Is it convenient to rent on property?

There are a few places to rent on property. The one we have used is the Alamo/National at the Disney Car Care Center. If you call ahead of time, they will send a shuttle to pick you up at your WDW resort, and return you after the rental period as well. Was very convenient for us. I can't speak to prices/discounts as they vary throughout the year depending on demand.
