Car rentals at Honolulu airport

Checked it out yesterday. The following have rentals on the airport, with no shuttle:

Advantage
Budget
Avis
National
Hertz

I know it's been asked a lot lately, so I wanted to give a confirmation for these.

if you are using Alamo, definitely use their online check-in at home before you arrive. like someone else reported previously, this will allow you to bypass the lines and kiosks completely.

after getting our luggage from baggage claim, we got on the shuttle bus that was waiting outside by the curb, had a 3-minute shuttle ride, gave out check-in confirmation printout to the attendant at the parking lot, got the car we wanted, and were on our way within five minutes. completely painless!

here is my tips on Honolulu rentals, Hawaii rentals tend to show a little wear.. I know we are in a hurry but take an extra minute and fill out the dent and scratch chart, I like to put a mark on every side front to back just to cover everything.


A couple more, Oahu is not that big, and everyone drives slow, there is no way you will use a full tank of gas, so do not prebuy the tank. Just fill up in the end, the gas station at the airport seems to have fair prices, but they will not be open super early or late.

2 more, never leave anything in your car, and this is not NYC, do not use your horn, ever.

Coming from Mass, where we drive like the massholes that we are, this is a daily work in progress for me. But, 45-50 on the highway in most places is normal. And you don't honk unless there's a real danger. It's actually a city ordinance. Oh, and if you are unsure if you'll be able to make it through an intersection before the light changes, you wait at the green until you're sure you can get through. No one blocks intersections. No one.

if you've got access to use military facilities, there's a navy exchange gas station right across from the airport between Peltier Ave and Camp Catlin Roads.
